"Abomination"
0.5 starson by Doopfus1976Pros: Toyota reliability
Cons: Too many to summarize
Summary: This is Toyota's bid to become the SONY of the auto industry. For years the xB sold out (I doubt I saw a single xB on any Scion/Toyota lot until about a year ago.
The reasons were; it was cavernous inside, got good fuel economy and was startlingly different from anything else out there (and it was inexpensive to boot). Now you have a heavier/larger vehicle with way less useful interior space. I'm 6'4" and in the old model I was comfortable in the front and even the back (with another 6'4" person directly in front of me).
Now, with the newer model I don't fit in the back at all, and I can't really relax in the front, my legs don't have the same level of rake available. And even with the seating dailed all the way down, I am cramped.
What was once a fun boxy shape is now ungainly. This is not a redo, this is an abomination.
The poor sales person was saying how nobody's very happy with it. And the last time I drove by (on Saturday) they had NINE of the bloody things out front. NINE of them.
TOYOTA: Oh, look. We've got this American Sales Division (Scion's are all just Toyota's anywhere else in the world but the U.S.) and we sell a TON of these little toaster-shaped vehicles. We sell out year after year without a single discount or rebate. And better than that, we sell them AS IS and have the accessories bolted on there at the dealership.
This thing is selling like hotcakes, I know, LET'S COMPLETELY CHANGE IT FROM A CUTE LITTLE VEHICLE TO SOME MID-SIZED GAS GULPER THAT IS UGLY AS SIN FROM VIRTUALLY ANY ANGLE AND JACK THE PRICE UP. THOSE STUPID AMERICANS WILL EAT IT UP!
Ah, No FREAKIN' WAY. I hope you get the message, if you have a successful automobile, you TWEAK the design. You change the grill, a LITTLE BIT. You add BLUETOOTH as well as an iPod dock, and some new colours. YOU DO NOT SHOOT THE GOOSE THAT LAID THE GOLDEN EGGS FOR SUPPER! The new xD has been getting really bad reviews. Maybe Scion will quietly disapper. Couldn't happen to a STUPIDER company.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
(If you quietly drop this 'thing' and bring back the old xB, all may be forgiven. Maybe.)

"Scion probably should have continued the old Xb and called this new model an Xf or something. This new one is not the kiddie car the old one was."
I agree with specklebang with that quote. Scion ruined the xB and seeing how the xD is just the new xA, why not do the same with the new xb? I mean come on! the xA and xD look exactly alike and they renamed it but the new xB is totally different and they replace the best xB? Scion if you know whats good for you bring the box back! -
progress? heavier, bigger, less economy--just what killed Detroit and just the opposite of what I want in a vehicle. I'm glad I have the 2005 xb. When I replace it, it will not be with the new scion.

I don't have anything negative to say about the earlier version. My GF says that the old one is so ugly she would have refused to ride in it but I thought the old one was a cool car and I could always get another girlfriend.

Anyway, I did a ton of research before buying a car on June 25, 2007. My budget was $20K.

The competitors:

VW Rabbit - nice but pricey, back seats didn't fold flat & VW is the worst car company in the world.

Honda FIT - I really loved the seat folding feature but the front seats were very uncomfortable. I'm 5'6" and weigh 115# and no way could I make myself at ease.

Toyota Matrix - About to be discontinued. My son bought one and hated it. My ex has an 03 Corolla and I'm pretty impressed by it but, well, I just couldn't get into it.

Nissan Versa - I really liked this car. Back seats didn't fold flat but it was so powerless, I was afraid to merge in traffic.

And then the Xb was released and it was perfect. Still modestly sized, lots of power, extraordinarily comfortable and so much headroom that you have no feeling of being in a little car. Lots of cubby storage, huge glove box, under the floor storage, seats fold nearly flat, the 60/40 split has the small seat behind the driver so the passenger can pet the cat (who has his own car seat) without knocking out the passageway to the rear area. ***** as you will about the extra weight and size - this car sits firmly on the road and if you get hit, you might live through it.

I'm guessing that all the objections are because it is different. Look who we re-elected. Americans hate change.

My last car was an 03 Saab 9-5 wagon. This Xb kicks its ass and was exactly half the price. With dealer ripoff, sales tax, a 3rd party GPS, a 3rd party backup sensor, $19,990.00.

Scion probably should have continued the old Xb and called this new model an Xf or something. This new one is not the kiddie car the old one was.

Just because the new XB is better than the old one in virtually every possible way is no reason to hate it so much. If you actually test drove one you'd see that it rides and handles much better, is quieter, roomier, more comfortable and much more powerful. Granted, instead of 26mpg average you may only get 25mpg but with the 2008 XB you can actually merge into traffic and even pass mopeds with it.

If none of these things matter to you and you still prefer the old XB, they are still very easy to find since their owners are trading them in on the new XBs faster than the dealers can unload them at auction.

This thing is insulting. Basically an Americanized version of the original xB. I was hoping they would build on what they had with the original, which was a funky ride with unique import styling that was cheap to own & got GREAT gas mileage + TONS of interior room to boot.

They literally killed every single one of those things with this new model. Now, I gotta look to another company for my next car.

I hate you, Scion for what you've done. You all should be ashamed for ruining your trademark automobile.
