Regarding the around-town driveability issues that some reviewers have noted...I find the "Sport" setting to be my favorite for daily driving. It offers more power than the "Intelligent" setting while avoiding the boy-racer twitchiness of the "Sport Sharp" setting (although I'm quite fond of that one too, on the right roads). Our STI is my wife's daily commuter and she is pleased with how it drives.
Those considering the STI, especially those who aren't keen on the hatchback styling and prefer a sedan, should also take a look at the new 2009 WRX which offers a significant performance boost over its predecessors, both in power and handling, at a much lower price than the STI.
