Pros Great gas mileage, European driving feel, amazing sunroof, lots of space, elegant interior...simplistic but nice, nice car lines and a classy wagon look, 4 cylinder TDI is a plus, great room in front, full size spare tire, fun to drive!
Cons I did not get Nav because it cost too much and it isn't that sophisticated, nice space in back unless you have really long legs, Service can only be done at an authorized VW dealer, needs larger gas tank, can't pull anything with the DSG transmission
Summary I waited a long time to get this car and am very glad I did it. I traded in my 2005 Element that I bought new for it and even though the Element has lots of room for the coffee beans I transport for my business, it is no longer made and the gas mileage isn't enough to keep. Enter in the VW TDI JETTA SPORTSWAGON! I am averaging 28-36 mpg's around town and am expecting 42-45 mpg on road trips! I like the radio console but you can opt out on NAV since phones and Garmin's offer that for much cheaper. You are going to love the sunroof and it does impress those sitting in the back when you open it. I am very impressed with the handling of the car. While the Jetta Turbowagen is not made in Wolfsburg, you can be assured that it was made by German Engineers and then built by robots in Mexico...your NAFTA dollars at work. I have a friend who is a Mercedes mechanic and he said that this is an awesome car and Mercedes can't even touch what this offers so take that Mercedes! I have to agree and by the way, the Mercedes dealership sales people were too arrogant and had little knowledge of their product line so I went right over to Volkswagon and got myself 0% financing on this wonder! There is 66.0 cu inches of space in the back and the spare tire is FULL SIZE! It's a joy to drive and you would never know it was diesel by the smell because there isn't any. Turbocharged Diesel Injection (TDI) coupled with common fuel rail and particulate filter insures that 99% of the output is reburned. The engine is also very quiet for a diesel. Another thing you need to know and this is important if you are looking into diesel is that these JETTA models require no addition of the urea that is called BLUE TEC fluid. It is in the PASSAT but not in the 4 cylinder diesels offered in Jetta and Sportwagon models. That is a money saver! Wake up America and realize that diesel IS AN ALTERNATIVE FUEL and that we need to start driving more 4 cylinder diesels. Some complain it's only 140 horsepower. It isn't about the horsepower anyway...it's about the TORQUE and this gem has 236 pounds of torque so it gets the job done. Would I buy another one? YES! I do recommend the extra warranty too. I get worried when warranties at 3 years or 36,000 miles stop so VW offers an extended warranty that will give you peace of mind.
All in all, the VW JETTA TDI SPORTSWAGON is as close to perfect in a car your are going to get for the money. It is both utilitarian and satisfies your inner need to drive fast. Speaking of fast, I drove past a CHP at 60 in a 45 and he didn't even turn around. So, the wagon version may look boring but it is an elegent car designed around even more amazing German Engineering.
Go take a test drive in one and you will see that what I have said here in this blog rings true. This car is destined to be popular for a very long time with those who truly get that CLEAN DIESEL technology is mature and fun to drive without the diesel smell. THERE IS NO SMELL.
Pros As much storage as small SUV, 35-45MPG, FUN to drive, great power, huge roof rack, love the panoramic sunroof, great looking. Attractive interior with nice touchscreen audio and great seats.
6-speed manual is awesome! DSG is pretty good too
Cons minimalist bluetooth, few sound system options, DSG takes some getting use to with strange pauses in acceleration at time, easy to stall with 6-speed manual (you get use to it over time),
Summary This Cnet review is rediculous to take one of the most perfect cars in existance and only give it 3 stars simply because it lacks some techie options that other cars have. I understand this is a tech website, but there is a lot more to a great car than the # of options on the sound system!
I've literally owned 2 of these. A 2010 with the 6-speed, and a 2011 with the DSG. I've LOVED both!! I'm a person that buys and sells cars/trucks quite often, so I have a lot of experience with other cars, trucks, and SUVs. Before the SportWagen my 2004 4Runner V8 was my favorite of all time, but the Sportwagen has won my heart for #1 all time vehicle. It is simply amazing! It has most of the versatility of an SUV with incredible power, gas mileage, and on top of that it's incredibly fun to drive. The ONLY faults with this car is lack of techie options which cnet pointed out.
I totally recommend saving $1300 and buying the 6-speed manual, it's better than the DSG, but my wife won't drive a manual so we traded for one with DSG which is good, but manual is better!
Best car EVER sold in the USA, do yourself a favor and give it a test drive if you're in the market for buying.
