  • "Worked ok for 1 yr, died 11 days after warranty expired"
    on by atancraitor

Pros Works well for the first year. Very quiet. No problems at all for first year. Handled washing dog beds, rugs, and king-size bed spreads with no problems.

Cons Died 11 days after the one-year warranty expired. Whirlpool's customer service was EXCEPTIONALLY rude; they didn't want to help, just wanted to sell me a maintenance plan.

Summary At first it stopped spinning the loads, and I would open the washer to find the clothes were still dripping wet. I put in smaller and smaller loads thinking maybe I was overloading it & it still wouldn't spin. After about a week of having to re-run the Drain & Spin cycle on every single load, it quit washing entirely. I would have to stand in the laundry room and babysit the washer, because it would just shut off mid-cycle. I tried calling Whirlpool's customer service, but they were not helpful in the least. First, they are only available Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm, so I had to call from work. They didn't care what was happening with the washer and actually said, "it doesn't help me that you're trying to explain what's wrong. We don't really care." They just wanted to set up a service appointment and get me to buy their maintenance plan. I ended up calling and speaking to a local appliance repair guy, who told me exactly what was wrong (control board died), and said that this is VERY VERY common with these washers. We replaced the control board ($117 @ Sears Parts Direct, super easy, did it ourselves) and it works fine now. Just very frustrating to get no help from the manufacturer, and to have something die just days after the warranty expires.
