Manufacturer: Adobe Systems

Manufacturer description

Macromedia HomeSite 5 is a powerful, efficient solution for Web developers seeking a flexible approach for hand-coding Web pages. HomeSite 5 delivers advanced code validation and XHTML support and is part of an integrated workflow when combined with Macromedia Dreamweaver, Dreamweaver UltraDev, and Fireworks. Macromedia HomeSite 5 introduces an industry-leading approach to integrated XHTML support. XHTML brings more structure and creativity to displaying HTML, and will play an increasingly important role in delivering Web content to various devices and platforms. The coding features in HomeSite 5, such as tag editors, tag insight, and color-coding, all support the XHTML specification. HomeSite 5 also includes improved file management, code validation, project deployment, extensibility, and double-byte character support. Code validation verifies the syntax of the code, and a Codesweeper ensures it is formatted to user-configurable preferences. HomeSite can also manage complex Web applications using physical, virtual, auto-inclusive folders, as well as through integration with leading source control software. The product can also be easily automated and customized to increase user productivity. In addition to XHTML support and code validation, HomeSite 5 will improve developers' workflow through integration with Macromedia Fireworks. HomeSite users can select an image file and launch Fireworks from within HomeSite to edit the graphic.

When Macromedia merged with Allaire in March 2001, the two companies' product lines complemented each other nicely. Whereas Dreamweaver is the reigning visual Web page editor, HomeSite appeals to developers who prefer to work in raw code or need to program more than HTML. It has always been popular for its customizability, automation, and highly intuitive interface for handling and editing multiple files. The newest HomeSite release makes a strong product even better with new features and improved performance.

Growing with the times
HomeSite's first asset has always been its editing window, with myriad options that can be as helpful or as nonintrusive as the user prefers. In keeping with the expanding Web, HomeSite 5.0 extends color-coding, tag help, validation, and code optimization to support still more languages beyond HTML. It recognizes XHTML documents by their and validates and edits tags accordingly. Visual Tools Markup Language (VTML) lets you create tag support for new document types such as custom XML DTDs. The editor also now has a double-byte mode that supports Unicode and other international character sets.

Another HomeSite strength is its file-handling interface, which has convenient devices for editing and managing several documents at once. This version adds a Secondary File panel that lets you work with content from two locations at a time. A smart FTP manager, integrated with Windows Explorer, transparently handles FTP connections and transactions for you. And the new Auto-Backup feature regularly saves works in progress to a backup folder, so the user can selectively retrieve earlier versions after an unwanted save, a system outage, or a change of heart.

Other new features aim at the developer who manages an entire site or also works with graphics and design. A new project-deployment system automates rule-based file publishing to one or several remote servers. It has a steep learning curve but can be scripted, and it is quite a time-saver once you get it going. HomeSite 5.0 also introduces nominal integration with other Macromedia products: a button lets users switch to editing in Dreamweaver, and a menu command opens any image in Fireworks, which attempts to find the original source file.

Stronger, with minor scratches
The stability and performance are much improved over previous versions, handling complex file systems and large open documents with speed and grace. HomeSite is still fragile on the edges: dragging the wrong panel icon or attempting a misconfigured deployment gets you a long pause or a cryptic error message. But in our most abusive tests, the program didn't once crash or freeze.

Some of the new features are not as well integrated as they could be. The project-deployment interface doesn't make it clear that you can use servers that you already entered in the FTP manager. And after you designate a document as XHTML, HomeSite still won't validate it as such unless you tell the program to do so in the Options menu. Still, these are inconveniences that you'll have to deal with only once.

Weapon of choice
Most of your experience with HomeSite 5.0 will be churning out quality code and managing your site's files with ease and convenience. Macromedia has successfully updated this editor to keep up with a maturing Web. For current HomeSite users who don't run Windows 95, the $29 upgrade is an outstanding value, but any Web developer who creates and manages volumes of code and other Web content should strongly consider HomeSite 5.0.

The Secondary Files panel lets you work from two directories at once.

Just uninstall Notepad, use this!

Pros: everything you could possibly need to edit html.

Cons: nothing really, besides a few imperfections

Review: This program is nearly perfect. Download the trial now!

TRASH THIS! GET DREAMWEAVER

Pros: NONE, TRUST ME!!!

Cons: Not very advanced features, most people can write that kind of HTML from memory!

Review: GET DREAMWEAVER! Macromdeia Dreamweaver:
MUCH MORE ADVANCED, MUCH MORE USER-FRIENDLY, MUCH EASIER TO USE, MUCH MORE USEFUL.

User Rating: 9/10

Very very friendly!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Good and simple design with powerfull options. Don't need IE (or NS) open all the time, like MX... I hope they release vr6!!

User Rating: 7/10

All it's missing is JavaScript

Pros:

Cons:

Review: HomeSite has been so easy to use that it has made a coder out of me...I'll never go back to the WYSIWYG (FrontPage is in my background). I like it's html support, the add-in for CSS, the one thing they need to add is better JavaScript support

User Rating: 8/10

The best code editor around

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is simply the best code editor there is. It's faster and more stable than the excellent DreamWeaver MX, but includes most of the good MX options.

User Rating: 3/10

still gpfs

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I paid $30 for an upgrade and the new version doesn't even have what they used to call design mode. Can't see how its improved. I write letters to them complaining but they never write back. I bet there flagship stuff is good, but you can tell this is 3rd cousin around there now.

User Rating: 10/10

Still the best hand coder out there

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have yet to find another editor that maps folders to installed local servers as well as homesite. I have Apache, Mia Mia and PWS all running on W2K and Homesite will preview all the various server side scripting languages internally. Awesome. No DB wizards, but if you are serious about working with PHP etc, you should hand code anyhow. Only a few minor nags like the system'ss preference for gifs when you start the insert image dialog. One request ... some debugging tools. Macromedia probably has no plans to upgrade this app since they would rather have you use DWMX, and thats too bad since MX's support for PHP is limited and they have probably never heard of mivascript. So hang on to this baby ... they don't get any better.

Great for pure HTML editing!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I learned to develop pages in HomeSite. It's great, the amount of features is superb. They're right about some of the error messages being cryptic. This is especially true when validating documents that have missing <tr> or <td> tags. However, I love both Codesweeper and the page validation. They are a great help when used in conjunction with each other. They make it easy to find mistakes in the code. It is sad that they removed the design view from 5, it was a great feature that 4.x had. I guess Macromedia figured that the design view was stepping on Dreamweaver's toes. I highly recommend this program to all pure HTML coders

User Rating: 10/10

Great, Easy to use product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I found this a great beginner product as well as one full of options which grew as I did. It is capable and stable and very user-friendly.

User Rating: 10/10

Fantastic HTML editor

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I checked out trial versions of HomeSite, Dreamweaver from Macromedia, and HotDog Professional from Sausage Software. Dreamweaver is the only WYSIWYG editor I considered, and I found it to be difficult to use. It also generated unreadable HTML. Homesite and HotDog were both good, but I decided to go with Homesite. I haven't been disappointed, it is easy to use and has lots of great features.

If you have Homsite 4.x, do not upgrade to 5.0

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I wasted my money upgrading to 5.0. They remove the WYSYWYG functionallity of 4.0, the design view.

User Rating: 7/10

The best tool for code-centric development.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I love it. There are extensions for every major web application language, You can totally customize the look feel and functionaluty of the application.

User Rating: 8/10

Does it all quickly and cleanly

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I created my 25mB website mostly using notepad. After switching over to Homesite and seeing how easy the job COULD have been I just keep kicking myself (figuratively, of course).

User Rating: 10/10

No Competition

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Nice code highlighting and excellent autocomplete for ASP. One feature missing is the block highlighting found in TextPad.

User Rating: 9/10

Just keeps getting better!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I would concur that the stability on HS 5 is substantially improved. Support for XML, CSS, etc. is impressive - a lot of tools here to grab so it will take time. If you are a desktop publishing type, be warned. If you have been working in a text editor this is the coup de' gras.

User Rating: 10/10

Excellent HTML Editor for all skill levels

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Excellent features that one can use or elect not to use. Clean code without a bunch of proprietary "junk" added in. Well documented help files. Much improvement in features and stability over the last couple of versions.

User Rating: 2/10

A few steps up from Notepad...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: ...And a few steps down from Interdev. This is a good, lightweight, yet feature-rich editor.

User Rating: 10/10

Best TextEditor ever.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I'm used to edit my webpages through editors like TextPad and been happy with that, but HomeSite is totally awsome :) Everything is SO easy - I even rate it higher than Dreamweaver.

User Rating: 10/10

A real programmer's HTML editor.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It's more a developer's tool, rather than a visual designer's tool. I like much better than any other html tool, because it gives me, the developer the full control.

User Rating: 10/10

Best HTML Tool Ever!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been using Homesite since the beginning and it has really matured into a sweet product.

User Rating: 10/10

The best HTML editor on the market.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: One thing it'll let you do that no other editor will (as far as I've seen) is CHOOSE YOUR OWN CUSTOM COLOR-CODING OF HTML SYNTAX. Also, powerful multiple-file search and replace, customizable keyboard shortcuts for code snippets, and much more.

User Rating: 10/10

The best HTML editor

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used many HTML editors from glorified versions of Notepad to WYSIWYG editors and none can compare to Homesite.

User Rating: 4/10

Potentially good, but far too dangerous

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just had several hours of work completely wiped out by the Trial Version of Homesite 5. I can't believe this just happened... The undo features of the SW don't work.
