The good: Saturated color; highly adjustable; impressive software package.
The bad: Pixelated and grainy images.
The bottom line:Although this Webcam has great color and comes with a comprehensive software package, its picture quality is subpar when paired with video instant messengers.
Available for about $70 (as of March 2004), the Creative Webcam NX Ultra has the best color quality of the cameras we've tested, and it comes with a comprehensive software package to boot. It's a little on the large side--a bit smaller than a deck of cards--but it swivels 360 degrees, making it highly adjustable. Setup takes only a couple of minutes, and you can choose to install the full software package, PC-Cam Center, which includes a photo-album utility and programs for editing video and photos. Another CD includes software for creating e-cards with photos, greeting cards, and other related video materials. A handy button on the top of the camera launches the PC-Cam Center software and also snaps pictures when the PC-Cam Center window is open. In our tests, the NX Ultra's color was bright and saturated for taking photos and short videos, but the quality suffered from somewhat pixelated images on the receiving end of our video-messaging test.
