like you got too much of it from the .com boom, why would anyone bother with the XP monster, especially paying retail? I have to deal with it at work, and stay away from it as far as I can at home (ESPECIALLY outlook and passport...yeeeewwww). 1. The license scam is just, how can I put it politely, evil. 2. I won't touch anything from MS less than 3 yrs old. I'm running Win98SE and that's the only OS from MS that I trust. I can do EVERYTHING XP claims to do (the ones I want anyway), with little paid-for software (mostly supplied by hardware vendor) -- wireless home network, firewall, CD/DVD burn/playback, Digicam drive access, DV editing via firewire, TV/video capture, backup. I pay less money, sleep better at night, and have less guilt of patronizing the Evil Empire. But, thanks guys for paving the road for me if you insist so. ;> The M$ Martyrdom Squad, may you find 99 virgins waving Windows flag at you at the Billy Gate. Sorry, couldn't help... Have to mention ONE thing 98se really impressed me, though. I put together a new PC, reusing only the old HD and NIC (well, and a fan). The old installed 98se figured out the new BIOS and all the new devices on the motherboard. That's pretty darn nifty!

I use a dial-up at home to access the net, so downloading SP1 or using the updater was not an option. I downloaded the 134Mb SP1 file at work, burned it to a CD, and took it home. After backing up my critical files, I installed SP1 and did not have any problems. I am running a legal (I bought it at a retail store in retail packaging) and activated version of XP Home. Once installed, it did take a couple minutes to reboot the first time. After that is was about the same as before SP1. It is more stable than before and I have not experienced any lock-ups, blue screens, or any other problems as of yet. I was having issues before with shutting down and occasional lock-ups when using my burner or USB devices. Now everything is working great. As always, you are taking a chance loading anything Microsoft, but for me, this time, everything worked fine. If you are having problems with XP and have a legit copy, SP1 is worth the download and risk. If you are not having any issues with your system - be smart, leave it alone - don't let the "upgrade bug" bite you where it hurts...

One of the sneaky little fixes is Media Player 9, which is forced down your throat. MP9 is a beta version, which doesn't work, tries to report what you play to Microsoft, and can make songs played only good for the computer that they are recorded on. This player CANNOT be removed. Restore seems to work, but nothing changes. You have to reformat your drive and reinstall with your original XP disks, then go get individual security updates. Remember plugins for IE? Just try and add a third party plugin for say, video streaming, in IE 6. Nope. Microsoft will have none of that. You WILL use their software and you WILL use it like they TELL you to. I can't believe MS would take a good OS like XP pro and ruin it like this. Linux never looked so good.

I started with a working system. Then I installed winXP SP1, now my system wont even boot anymore. Indeed, I must say, this new SP has the fastest startup and shutdown time ever. The whole userinterface seems to be taken away (ofcourse, letting the user do something slows down the shutdown procedure), instead the system now decides to shut down itselve. After restarting in safe mode I decided to do one of those system recoveries of Microsoft. Great, after that my system wont even start in safe mode anymore. If this is Microsoft's "service" then people would be better of without service. In short, Windows XP SP1 is the best virus I have ever seen. And it's completely "innocent" because the user installs it himselve.

However, this is a known issue and for those using ver 5.xx, there is an update patch for Easy CD Creator available @ roxio.com. Applied the patch, and the Easy CD Creator works as before. Other than that, no problems. I have to wonder how many people who are having problems after SP-1 have either upgraded to XP or are using a version with a hacked identifier key?

We downloaded the SP1 for XP and it completely crashed our computer. The Microsoft support site has very little information and we found more on the forum area on the Microsoft site. From the CNET site and the Microsoft forum, it is obvious that lots of people are having problems with this download. I had to do a new setup with the original Windows CD to repair the damage. Better to wait and just do the critical security updates.

My home computer is a 2.0Ghz Dell 8200 with XP Home on it. Having read about the major security hole in XP on www.grc.com, I opted to install SP1 ASAP. Just before retiring for the night I connected to Windows Update and let it do its thing... which, based on the comments here, was probably unwise! (Leave my computer to Microsoft? At night? What was I thinking?) SP1 installed with only a very slight hiccup (a cryptic dialog box when I rebooted - it never appeared again). No changes in performance noted.

Necessary upgrade for the preferred OSby - September 22, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
For maximum hardware and application compatibility, no other operating system (from Microsoft or anyone else) matches Windows XP. And since no operating system is perfect, you need to keep up with hardware changes, and the inevitable bug fixes. Windows XP (even without Service Pack 1) is incredibly stable. SP1 *adds* to that stability, and, in some situations, increases performance (and even application compatibility). If you run Windows XP, this upgrade (along with IE 6 SP1) is a must-download.

There's not really much I can say about the low, low quality of SP1 that hasn't already been said. Destroyed Remote Access Connection Manager serviceby - September 20, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I downloaded and installed SP1 on a brand-new, just-out-of-the-box Dell PC and everything seemed fine, until I tried to set up my home network and add a dial-up internet connection. After hours and hours on the phone with tech support, getting no useful answers, and troubleshooting on- and offline, I finally traced the root of the problem: the "Remote Access Connection Manager" service (Control Panel-Administrative Options-Services) had been irreparably damaged. The service could not be started, and since ICS, ICF, DUN, etc. all depend on this service, I could not do anything with the system network-wise. Uninstalling the SP did not solve the problem. Performing a System Restore back to the first time I turned the system on did not fix the problem. I ended up having to reformat and reinstall Windows XP on a machine that was less than a week old. Once that was done, I downloaded and installed some of the individual security patches and bug fixes (not all of them), and have had no further difficulties so far. I advised Dell of this issue and recommended they alert their customers. Stay away from this one.

User Beware....by - September 18, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I have reviewed dozens of message boards and read hundreds of user feedback. (I?m a Systems Analyst for the DOD) and far too many users are getting poor results....or downright failures....after installing SP1. My Outlook express lost all settings, including user profile...no biggy, except it wouldn?t even import previously saved settings, saying the file was invalid. Then Outlook Express, IE6 and even Quicken 2003 would just close inadvertently. And of course I got the infamous ?Windows Fatal Error? message when trying to run a few of my apps, such as TweakXP. After a few hours of this, I decided to remove SP1 using the Uninstall option...BIG MISTAKE...Why should I expect less from MS. Everything went well at first, until I tried to reboot, and of course it wouldn?t reboot...even in SAFE MODE. After a few dozen recovery attempts, I booted into Windows ME (I run Both Systems on my PC) and used that for a day. The next day I attempted to reboot XP in safe mode again, just on the REMOTE chance it would work...and it WORKED...I was then able to restore a last best configuration and it seems to work fine after using it for a couple of days?..Go figure? What I have noticed is that a LARGE number of users with ATI video cards are having issues (I use an ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon with Catalyst 2.3 Driver). This may be one of the problems, but ATI states that the Catalyst was specifically made for XP SP1. I would, however, discourage ATI users from installing SP1 and wait a while to see if ATI discovers problems and releases a fix?.My opinion only. If others are having similar problems please let ATI know. Over all, I would highly recommend WAITING to install this...(wait for M$ to release the UPDATE to SP1...of course we?ll never know since they?ll just sneak it in)...or if you do install it, MAKE A SYSTEM RESORE POINT, Back up all your data and shut down any Firewall, Anti-Virus or other Security applications (Ad-Aware, etc.) before running this. beullar

I did like the ability to uninstall individual components such as media player and messenger, but I never used them anyway. Backing up files for de-installation option of the Service Pack was a 30 minutes farce: it did not work ,because it wanted a 20GB storage area (the size of my harddrive). still took an hour to install everything else. Now, with a full install and no deinstall option, I find my laptop slowed down considerably. Seems to me the 300+ bugfixes created 150 new bugs. The guy who said "SP1 turbocharges Windows XP" must have been doing wayyy worse than I did before SP1. Without making use of half my periphery (lots of screens of death with WinXP) I had used with Win98, my laptop actually worked better BEFORE I installed SP1!

I have just installed it, and my system is warming up to the install. I welcome the reinstall of the JVM that was uninstalled due to controversy with Sun. The BIG and VERY welcome surprise was that upon restarting SP1 RECLAIMED 1 GIG of my HD space. This is proving to be a HUGE benefit to my protable unit, a two-yr old laptop with only 6 gigs of HD space. I am assuming, at this point, that it cleaned up the previous redundant updates and unnecessary code. So far I am pleased and will repost with additional info in regard to performance increases as I encounter them.

SP1 resets my settings at each reboot...by - September 15, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
SP1 resets my ATI color settings at each reboot. I have a laptop with a ATI Mobility M1 video card and I had the brightness for my display at a lower setting to reduce the stress on my eyes. Now, everytime my laptop loads Windows and as soon as my desktop appears, my fine tuned color and brightness settings reset themselves right before my eyes. Even with new video drivers, SP1 still manages to crawl under my skin with that error. With SP1, I might not get headaches from security holes, but I certainly am getting headaches with this glitch.

Tried to uninstall the pack and it screwed up my system further. I ended up reformatting and reinstalling XP. Thumbs up because if you have XP you'd better bloody well install it or you have security problems. But what is this about microsoft assuming the role of police for the music multi-nationals... I still use windows machines, but only for games. I switched to Mac OS X becuase of the command line, but now I am extremely glad I did. Even if XP worked 1000 times faster, what speed is worth the thought police sending unwanted programs to your system? However, XP doesn't work better than OS X. I would say, having used both extensively, that it is more or less a draw on the functionality side. Just look at the Jaguar user reviews... people do a lot less complaining there. Sorry, got away from the topic. I agree with a John Alderman below. You MUST install this if you are a windows user. It probably will cause problems, as MS tries to fix things over a huge variety of platforms (a problem Apple doesn't have) and it is pointedly frightening to have microsoft taking the role of corperate enforcer... i'd say its time to consider switching to another system.

And I didn't even know about the changes to the EULA that I've read here. MSFT has the right to download programs to my machine? Scary. More and more, I'm spending my time in front of my mac. I hate to sound like an evangalist, but if you're frustrated, talk a look at OS X 10.2. Apple has done a lot of wrong things in the past, but they got this one right.

It's hard to tell the benefits of a Service Pack when it causes the Blue Screen of Death upon reboot and every reboot afterwards. I'm just happy I was able to go into Safe Mode to remove the Service Pack. Then, after that reboot, MS attempts to log an error report ,but can't submit the report. So, MS never finds out of my crash. All I get is a message that a "Device Driver" caused the fatal crash. Hmmm, let's see now, how many Device Drivers are there...nice help. I had this similar problem with a CD Burner Hotfix that lock the machine right up.

I can?t believe that your telling people not to service pack their Operating System. All of the security holes in this OS are well documented. That means that not only do we? the end users know about them but the hackers do as well. Let?s face it; the hackers are going to concentrate their efforts on the Operating System that will allow them to do the greatest mass damage. This just happens to be anything with the word Windows in front of it. Advising your readers to not run this service pack is like telling people in the hood to go to bed at night and leave their front doors unlocked. Not a good idea. I have been an I.T. professional for almost 10 years now and have been a loyal reader of the CNET newsletters and content from your web site, but if this is the direction that you are moving in I think I will have to look elsewhere for tech info. At least at Tech TV they don?t dispense advice that is this irresponsible.

If you don't use Windows update you will need to get all 140MB. Quit putting this product down, XP has been the best OS I have ever used. It is super stable, boots fast, suspends and restores into all kinds of different environments without a hitch and just generally runs great.

Could do a better job than thisby - September 12, 2002
Pros:

Review:
I believe in paying for quality and respecting copyright laws. Hence all my software, Office, firewalls etc are originals. I do not download MP3s. Hence I do not expect any problems with this download of the service pack. However this had been a huge disappointment. Firstly my system went well, noticeably more responsive especially the internet explorer. However problems starts to pile up. My windows messenger is insistent on connecting to the web (I turn usually keep it off). I doubt the wisdom of letting an application which I do not use frequently have an open connection to the web. Since I cannot continue without all those repetitive messages interrupting repeatedly, I let it connect automatically to the web. Things went smoothly until I tried a software which has been consistently reliable. It hanged and I had to reboot. Then things really went downhill from here. First, the system slowed to a crawl (P4 1.6 256). Menus become almost totally unresponsive. My only hope was to use the system restore, and it literally crawled (10 minutes) to that application (which is a relief). I choose to reset it to earlier date. And before I finished the sequence, I received a message from the firewall that a remote system was trying to connect to my computer (a potential hacker?). I ignored it and now I am using my service pack free version to write this. It is not perfect but at least I did not have remote strange systems trying to connect to my computer before. One final note before I finish, I run Ad aware before and after installation and did not find any spyware in my download.

Okay, I got the download for one main reason -- to rid myself of the Windows Media Player which had hijacked my settings and opened whenever I listened to music -- no matter how I tried to get rid of it. So the update is supposed to allow you to "remove" Microsoft components. That's exactly what I did by unchecking the "allow access" to Windows Media setting. However, the Windows Media program still appears and still won't let me use MusicMatch to play music. Unbelieveable!

Well Done MSby - September 12, 2002

This is a sleek, smoothly installing, highly recommended update. It fixed a couple of problems on my system, one regarding performance of my USB 2.0 ports. The system does seem to be a little bit quicker booting and just as fast otherwise. A couple of related comments: For those who still don't understand, you deserve what you get if you tried running the SP-1 Beta on your main work machine. Also, I can see we have the same FUD being spread about XP and MP3 files again. Nothing in Windows will prevent you from playing your own MP3s on your own PC. Now if you want to go around stealing music with illegal MP3s, that's a risk you take. Having said that, I would definitely suggest XP users update to ensure continued security and reliability of their OS, unless you have religiously downloaded updates/patches all along.

Avoid XP SP1, Beta or Otherwiseby - September 12, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
This update put my previously stable installation into the same endless reboot cycle as others have described here. There does not appear to be a way to install SP1 without replacing existing hardware drivers. More importantly than this are the changes to the EULA that not permit Microsoft to install 'digital rights' enforcement software to your system without further warning or consent. Since this could disable your ability to play MP3s made from CDs you actually own in the future, why take the risk?

Like many others have noted here, my machine also got into a reboot loop after installing SP1. The only reason that I gave SP1 a "2" for features is that once I got back in Win XP in safe mode (which I never had to do until I got this SP), I was able to uninstall SP1 (since I chose the option to be able to revert to pre-SP1) and everything looks to be back to normal. I'm very experienced with PC's, and this is a loaded, but clean system with top notch, name brand hardware. Pathetic! And I also hear now that they waited until this SP to fix a major security bug, now I can't load the fix for that either . . . Glad MS got the SP3 for 2000 right (when it has been out for 3 years, not less than 1). . . maybe we should all go back to Win2000?

I think it is a real rip off that M$ wants $10 for a disk, they should be handing them out for free on every street corner. Instead they want to charge $10 for a 50¢ CD and $2 worth of shipping cost. Nothing like having a product recall (which is in effect what they are doing, rewriting the OS, to fix all their f#@k ups, that should have been done before it was ever released) and charging the custumer to fix a manufacturers screw up. And the idea of having to spend a whole day downloading a rewritten OS anytime a you need to reinstall the OS is BS. I like the stabilty of XP as compared to ME, but am sick of M$'s tactics. I won't purchase anything from them again. HEAR THAT M$! You've gone to far pushing the public around and have lost yet another paying customer!

For those of you that haven't come across NT or 2000 and are expecting bonuses and extras, that's not the point of Service Packs, they exist solely to keep the core OS functions current and often deal with aspects of the OS that the average user doesn't understand or won't be interested in. In this respect, SP1 for XP does everything you'd expect - no more, no less.

Extreamly Poor Qualityby - September 11, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
After taking over a 1/2 hour to down load via the cable, I was expecting something better than what SP1 provides. If and when my system would boot up most programs would run slower and the video was very choppy. This was particularly evident in Microsoft's Flight Sim 2002 which is very graphic intensive. My system got so bad that it finally went into what I call the "Ground Hog Day" movie mode in that the computer would only half way boot up and then loop to the start point again and again and again... I was lucky in that my computer shop was able to access the CD drive so we could load my Windows XP Home disk over the top of this so called patch. I now have my computer working again and no more SP1 (maybe 95% gone) My 3D test results are aproximately 200 points lower than my pre SP1 results and this is most likely due to DX 8.1b and all of the video dll's in SP1. I loaded back all of the individual security fixes prior to SP1 and will "NOT" put SP1 back on the machine until MS can get it out of "Beta Testing" The only product I have sceen worse than this SP1 was Windows Me. PS: Be careful when downloading MS updates as they "Place" SP1 and it's associated internet explorer patches in with any single security update. You physically have to delete SP1 from the list "EACH" time you download a patch as MS tries to sneak it in each time.

Service Pack 1 may include a few fixes for Windows XP, but it comes at a high cost. The service pack includes code that can disallow some legal XP owners from installing the service pack on machines using certain product codes. You won't see Microsoft advertising it - but they've taken activation one step farther by checking your product code on updates to fix bugs that should have been fixed when you shelled out the money to begin with. Big brother, anyone?

New EULA means big changes...by - September 11, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
CNet should have mentioned the most important change to Windows XP which is affected by Service Release 1. Microsoft has quietly modified its End User License Agreement again. This time, the ramifications are quite clear. Under to the new EULA, Microsoft is permitted download software to your computer (without your explicit permission) which may perform any actions they see fit to protect intellectual rights of artists. What's that you say? You want to listen to that MP3 that you downloaded? Sorry! No dice. What's that you say? You own the album? Sorry! No dice. Microsoft has just assumed the right to surreptitiously install code of its choosing. You will not be warned; you will not be offered an opportunity examine the download or refuse it. MS will simply connect remotely and install what it will, or install it secretly when you contact them. As long as these issues go unrecognized by the general media as being extremely important to the right to privacy of all computer users, companies will continue to do as they please. Service Release 1 is a case in point. What do you have to say about that CNet? Here is an excerpt from the SR1 End User License Agreement. If you install the Service Release, then you have agreed to allow Microsoft to do this. "You agree that in order to protect the integrity of content and software protected by digital rights management ('Secure Content'), Microsoft may provide security related updates to the OS Components that will be automatically downloaded onto your computer. These security related updates may disable your ability to copy and/or play Secure Content and use other software on your computer. If we provide such a security update, we will use reasonable efforts to post notices on a web site explaining the update."

It does have a lot of software and the chips are faster I guess than the G4 in my computer. For what I do, they probably aren't much faster. Internet. Photoshop, Writing reports. some iphoto iapp stuff. Anyways, for anybody that has never used os x, it really doesn't ever crash. I've turned off the comptuer maybe 3 times in a year or something. Explorer crashes of course and some of the iapps and other browsers but the system itself never seems to go down. Seriously, if apple matches the x86 chip speeds why in your right mind would you use windows, other than little bit of savings that is made up way more problems and the the ability to play video games...Lame. anyways bye

Things I've noticedby - September 10, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I've noticed that the people who hate Windows XP mostly just ramble on about how Bill Gates needs to get a clue. One word: hypocrits. Bill Gates does not personally design every application and/or operating system that Microsoft makes. So YOU are the ones who need to get a clue. And I DID see one comment along these lines already, but I think it needs to be repeated. The reason Mac OS X (Any version) is SO stable is because it has about 1/1000th the software and hardware available that it needs to be compatible with. In other words, its stable, because its compatible... with all 8 variations of hardware and software that exist. Whereas Windows is relatively compatible with thousands of possible configurations. Not to mention issues of backward compatibility. Have you plugged a legacy printer into your Mac lately? I think not. Unix/Linux? Is great... if you have several hours to figure out how to use it. Amazingly, most people seem able to figure out the basics of Windows (Any version) while still in the retail store looking at a demo unit. Another thing I've noticed. Most of the people who have made complaints about this particular service pack have only used the BETA. If these knew anything about computers, they would KNOW that beta versions are notoriously unreliable. Thats why Microsoft specifically states on their download page that only experienced computer users should download it. Obviously you don't fit that criteria. I downloaded this service pack and it works great. Of course, there aren't any huge visual and functional differences, with the exception of the default software selector; which I think is somewhat pointless. I've never understood why you can't simply use Netscape or Eudora or Yahoo messenger or whatever while Microsoft products are installed and accessable? If you don't ever click on their icons, what harm are they really doing. If seeing the icons is that much of an annoyance to you, I suggest deleting the shortcuts. Although I'm sure thats too difficult for most of you. You may have to hire a computer tech to do such complicated things. Now I've used Macs,a nd Linux boxes. All of which are good machines. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. But the fact of the matter is that no matter which OS and/or hardware you prefer, Windows-based machines are the best suited for THE AVERAGE USER. To compare computers to cars... Windows machines are the 4-door coupes of the industry. Macs could maybe be compared to a high priced sportscar, and linux boxes to a low-cost motorcycle. Neither is as functional or as practical, but sure have their uses.

No matter what else people are saying this is worth the download. You get all the previous fixes (and if you have already downloaded a lot through Windows Update it will take take much less to download). And on the Removing IE6 and Messager and etc. Yes you can uninstall Windows Messenger and Windows Media PLayer (from the WIndows Install Remove Program -- not add/Remove Programs but the third tab in that screen for Windows) IE of course can't be uninstall (why would you anyway) but the SP1 will let you act like it is not there and under the same Add/Remove Programs box you find a new tab for easy access to changing your default players and browsers. Read the Cnet Review for more info (They said that this area should no other programs -- ie. Netscape-- when they tested it, but mine shows Netscape, AOL IM, Musicmatch, Real, and several other options -- I believe they may have reviewed the BETA when these features may not have been complete) NO MATTER IF you want MS apps or not this is still worth the download. Many new technologies and bugs have been updated to make windows that much better (for example XP now support fully USB 2.0 High Speed devices).

I have tried repeating the scenarios in which it used to hang (obviously i knew them beforehand) But it came through .... The reast are some version updates to messenger and stuff. Newer versions are fine with me .... I may seem like an absolute layman here ... but what i have written is exaclt what i feel on installing the SERVICE PACK . Review:
First off, i like XP Pro a lot. Or rather it used to be fast and great but after the SP 1 install, my computer is slower. It takes double the time to boot and shutdown, and for the first time ever, the computer locked up and permanently froze so that i had to just cut the power to the whole system, thats never happened since a win9x, not in 2000 or XP Pro until i installed this pack. It also seems to have slowed down my cable connection if thats possible. I am gonna stick with it for a while and see if i can make it work better but if your not too sure you should allow it to make the backups to be able to uninstall the SP 1 stuff or if your a relative passivist who want the thing to just work you are probably better off just sticking with your current version of XP and getting all the MS updates and security patches. BTW-The only noticeable additition was the customizer that allows you to designate what programs are your default browser, Media Player and Email client, so if you were looking for it to pretty up the looks of XP this is not what your getting, your getting under the hood fixes.

Customers aren't theves, Micro$oft!by - September 9, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
That's exactly what needs to go through the thick skulls of the people that run Microsoft (does Bill Gates ring a bell?). I keep up with the windows update, so, my SP1 download was pretty small. But that's where the good part ends. First, it treats people, and not just anybody, these people are their customers, like they were all pirates or theves. Because M$ stole (or cost, in terms of unfair business practices) money from it's competitors and used its monopoly to run them out of business, they are always scared of others trying to steal their stuff. Hence, search for the "product key." Ok, now that I have pointed out the ethical error in SP1, let's actually move on to features. Yeah, it let's you "remove access" to microsoft products. But, there are still no way of uninstalling IE or Windows messenger. And without any sort of service pack, you can set your default browser and mail programs to be different from the default ones. And oh, the "improved performance"... that's a laugh! Also, compatibility. Well, show me a vendor who'd make a product compatible with SP1 but not in the non-SP1 Windows XP version. Basically, don't get this update. Stay up-to-date with day-to-day windows updates, get java from Sun's website. And here's a messege to Microsoft: you are not the Attorny General's Office, and we are not criminals. You are a software maker, and WE WRITE YOUR PAYCHECKS.

Service pack works fine although regular Windows Update is a little easier than the 200+ MB download. I hate to come down to crybaby Microsoft bashers level, but I have a hard time when people complain about a product without actually evaluating it. Let me start by saying I use and like Linux and Mac OS X and I think they are great products. Why do Mac/Unix/Linux people think that any Microsoft (M$ for all the people who think they're clever) product release is an excuse to vent about why they hate Microsoft? Why do people think whining about Microsoft will win over support for other products? Here is a novel idea... actually give an honest review of the product in question. Idiots.

M$ disabled Java support in Windows XP a few months ago. (VERY annoying!) And now all of a sudden it's back, in this service pack. (which checks your cd-key for you, in case you "mistyped it" or something) You know, people who "love M$" are the type that enjoyed being stripped nude, hung upside down and beaten with a spiked paddle. Are you people insane? M$ has been abusing their customers for years and you guys can say things like "This is great!" and "XBOX RULEZ!"? (xbox has the worst line-up of games i have seen... xbox is horrible) And now they treat their customers like they are ALL potential thieves with this activation garbage. Add that to bad tech support (which is almost nonexistant, unless you wanna pay lots for it), a marketing driven strategy (rather than quality and/or customer satisfaction) and insanely high prices for a single user license and you can say this is wonderful? I would TOTALLY buy a Mac if they only made more games for them. Being a gamer means I am stuck with this "O.S." Fact is, you are being played by M$ and you guys are screaming "MORE! MORE!". I mean, you guys were saying how happy you were that it FINALLY let you remove stuff that installs by default into Windows that SHOULD be optional! Look what you are pleased by. Our expectations have been lowered THIS much! (to the point where you are happy to have ANY control over your "computing eXPerience") Do yourselves a favor, seek therapy, go Linux or buy an iMac. But don't pay M$ to treat you like this. After all, sodomy is illeagle in some states.

To say that MSIE6 is needed for Streets to work is a lie..I proved it by making a backup, reinstalling WinXP, and only putting back streets files and the registry entries and the EULA; it DOESN'T need Works. I'm sick of endless "hole fixes"; I just wish I had something hard and heavy to throw at Microsoft, and I wish the Justice Department all the best at bringing Microsloth to justice!

XP SP1 resets cannot download!by - September 9, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
Four separate attempts to download this update have failed mid-stride and I had contact with MS in regards to problems with XP Professional in July 2002 and received a beta patch which crashed the system into unusability as errors caused by the kb tool rendered the systems functionality inoperable requiring switching to another OS. Waiting for this service pack for XP has been a long wait and assurances that it was downloadable have proved to be false as the server from MS constantly resets itself and proves that MS XP Professional has serious problems which can only be addressed by the XP 1 service pack which proves to be impossible to download from the web site. If this is the best service that MS XP service pack 1 can provide-we here with 50+ copies of it can empahatically deny its usability and suggest that W2000 is the better choice until MS gets its act together as many OEM's are not including this update with new units sold.

OK ... Normally I wouldn't do a review on a product that isn't even released yet, but it absolutely amazes me how stupid people can be. To everyone who gave this a bad review remember ... this is BETA! If it didn't have any bugs they would have released it already. Wait till it is relased then review it. To bobcat0252 who claims to have completely removed IE from his system. Pack your computer back up and send it back because you must be the first person who IS a stupid as they look. You never removed IE. All you did was remove all links to it from your system. It is the same thing that would have happened if you removed it by going to add/remove windows components. And lastly to all you who go about crying "Microsoft broke my computer" most likely your computer was broken to begin with. NO you cannot damage your hard drive if the Format goes wrong. Just repartition and try again. And All thoes programs that "don't work with XP" Most of them are older 95 and DOS programs that have updated versions to begin with that are compatable. Ohh yeah, and about Java. The reason Microsoft doesn't support Java isn't because they want more money it is because the Government told them they can't as part of the antitrust settlement with the Department of Justice. So if you are going to complain about something please do your homework first and don't just complain to complain.

Mac does NOT "rule".by - September 3, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
Maybe Mac fans are like the little punk rockers who "liked greenday BEFORE they sold out". It makes you feel cool to be in the minority. There are some very good reason Mac users are in the minority. Mac's are at best twice as expensive as a good PC. I would love to have a dual processor G4 but I dont have 3000 dollars to blow on a computer that promises nothing more than more expenses down the road. Lack of available software just sweetens the deal. And linux is great... if (once again) you want to ignore the massive amount of PC software available (alot of it free too). To abandon windows now, however you feel about microsoft, is like crippleing yourself because walking with a bum leg is cool. Run linux, dual boot, buy a mac, but down get down on windows or even microsoft. Without Bill Gates you would not have anything close to the computer you have now (even if you run a mac or linux, Gates basicly invented home computing and without the competition, not to mention the bail out, Apple would be no solution). Windows XP is powerfull, stable, easy to use and setup and leaves the majority of computer users with even fewer reasons to go with a Mac.

Doesn't Gates understand that all people want is a stable, reliable, maintainable (by the owner - not some mysterious update from the dubious Microsoft organisation), ergonomic operating system. I am quite disppointed with it I have seriously considered reverting back to Win 98. The only reason I haven't done so isn't because of Win XP... It is because it would be too time consuming to reinstall all the other software I have on the hard drive. Overall it is a thumbs down from me. I will wait to see what this much publicised service pack does to the operating system. I bought this latest operating system as part of an upgrade so I spent less than I could have done. Let's face it. XP is probably M$'s best release to date. It's got better memory management that 2000 pro and has more managability features the ME. But it's no Unix that's for sure. Personally. I run OpenBSD on my PC most of the time. It's secure, RELIABLE and I don't have to restart every few days because of Memory Overflow Errors. Let's face it. My G4 867 with photoshop and OS X v. 10.2 and a Geforce 3 smokes my AMD XP 2000+ with a Geforce 4 Ti4400. And let's face it. M$ Did what they always do. Knock off a great OS. The Aqua interface was released before XP's watered down bubble look. Which looks so similar to OS X most windows gamers I know had to turn it back to Classic. M$ needs to concentrate on fixing all the bugs they've got. I say tear it down and build it up a new. But what's the point? M$ Developed XP on Linux boxes. M$ is tired and over done. Heck besides windows clients 2000 server can't authenticate ANY other clients with Active Services. Guess what OS X Server can do! XP, Unix and Mac OS X and 9!!! And a XServe the only 1U dual processor server smokes anything you PC monkies got! I say drop windows and just give up. Go Unix or Go home.

Upgraded from Win 98 SE to XP [plus Service Pack 1 Beta] on my Dell because I though it was supposed to be more stable ... NOT!!! I don't know what I was thinking. If this is the "best" MS can do, then I'm switching my PC's to Linux. I just got StarOffice and love it, especially the price compared to Office. Really, people, what suckers we have been for paying so much for an office suite that has basically done the same things for many years. My last peave is the the new Licensing issue. Read the fine print and you'll realize that we have 2 "big brothers" [FED and MS] watching us. After writing this, I just decided to switch. I'm going tp give my XP to my worst enemy. HaHaHa

I've switched from OSX to XPby - August 25, 2002

As it happens most of what is offered I already have on my Sony Vaio. Still a great beta and it's free unlike OSX. I find XP an amazing OS. I only have 256 ram on a P3 1.3 m notebook and it beats OSX even Jag version in Photoshop tests. My iBook 600 with 640 running Jag is left in the dust. My Titanium 677 1GB ram can barely keep up and that's with Photoshop at default memory allocation in XP! Also the interface can be changed something you are not allowed to do in OSX. Apple is the real monopoly. I am thrilled to be using XP something I have not been able to say about Apple since OS8.6

Windows XP just can't cut it!by - August 25, 2002

I can't believe anybody would waste their hard earned dollar on this bloated OS, it's not as stable as people claim, but's still clunky like the ones before! And now they come out with this SP1 beta release and it's still unstable and still clunky! Windows Media Player has a lot to be desired, QuickTime is still better for video streaming. It's sad that a company that has as much capital as Microsoft can't even build a OS worth buying, it's still mediocre. I think Apple's OS X is much better than this and they have apps people want. Who wants to sit and type Word documents, build Excel spreadsheets and draw PowerPoint presentations all day?.. not us home users, we want a piece of that 'digital hub' that those Mac users take for granted, not Office XX to feel some kind of importance. I think I am going to get a Mac now, this is such a waste of my time... call me when you figure it out Microsoft!

I recently made the switch, right boys, from a Mac to a Windows XP Professional system. I bought a system with XP Home edition first but returned it because of lack of firewall and domain login support (or I couldn't set it up) and got me a XP Professional Dell Dimension 8200. I like the fact that I can choose the hardware and software. Make sure you do not save on the graphics card. I'll be replacing 14 other boxes with XP professional after the evaluation, which is going fantastic.

*The best Microsoft OS yet*by - August 7, 2002

Review:
I have used ALL the Microsoft Operating Systems, but Windows XP, HOME or PROFESSIONAL, is the best yet. When i installed XP Pro I did a clean install (like anyone would do if they know what there doing) and it ook about 40 minutes, when it finished installing it asked to reboot so i did. Thats when I first experienced Windows XP's EXTREMELY fast boot time; It booted in a flat 20 seconds! Once it was fully booted I was prepared to install all of my drivers for my hardware, which i had to do when i installed my Windows 2000 Pro and Windows 98SE, but I had found Windows XP did it for me. I was stunned that it had found ALL the drivers itself, but then it came down to the Ultimate OS test: Get the System down to 0% resources free and see if it crashes. Did Windows XP crash? Listen to this, I opened ALL of Office XP Professional's Applications, Adobe Photoshop 7, Adobe Acrobat 5, ALL of Macromedia Studio MX, and 20 Internet Explorer Browser windows, ALL on 256mb of DDR sdram on my AMD ATHLON XP 1800+ Processor based PC, and I only had 3% resources left! But did it crash (if your impatient then heres your answer): No, but not only didnt it crash, I was still going on my way and could have opened up more; So i did! I got down till it said I was dangerously LOW in resources and I needed to close some Applications, but it didn't crash. The only other Microsoft OS that has EVER passed this test with me was Windows 2000 Professional. Also, I found that Windows XP Home Boots faster than XP Pro, which suprised me because there hardly different. And another thing, make sure you change your drives File System to NTFS if you upgrade from Windows 98 or ME! It makes it much more stable and causes less problems. The Windows XP service Pack Beta has nothing new that I care much for; because I use Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, and Windows Messenger. And I don't have any incompatible Hardware that require drivers, and I have all of the Windows Updates for Windows XP. The Beta isn't much right now, so if you don't have it, don't go and search on the net for a download site. Just wait till the final release, maybe then it will have something more to offer.

They still suckby - July 5, 2002

I am so sick of reading nothing but comments from Microborg who think they are in any way computer literate. Get a clue, people. I've tested XP for six months. Overall, Microsoft's best offering yet; but it's still garbage. You still have to reboot every few days to clear up memory overflow problems. For the most part, the assesories (outlook express, office, etc.) are still bloated with about a bazillion features that nobody uses. And, they are still selling a giant security hole. All you see is one article after another about the latest security flaw. Big deal, so they did a line by line audit. It was done by the same idiot programmers who created the bugs in the first place. You all can continue down the garden path with Microsoft if you wish. That is your right. But, when your ready for a real computing experience, try Linux. You'll have to work a little, but you won't be disappointed.

Windows XP = Windows ME minus the stability issuesby - July 4, 2002
Pros:

Review:
I have used windows ME for about 6 months and had nothing but trouble with it. I lost my patients with Windows ME and decided to try Windows XP Pro. I love Windows XP....it works wonderfully. Some of the others who are crying about hardware issues and software conflicts should have followed the instructions for the instalation procedure. You should have ran the software advisor first to find out what would not work, get the drivers and then install the new OS. That's what everyone else is doing and Windows XP will work perfectly if you do this. When I was installing XP, it warned me that my printer, game pad and video card would not work properly. Then it downloaded the new drivers for those, and it worked fine. The one thing that i found most convincing about Windows XP is that all of the conflicts and errors that I had on Windows ME simply disappeared when I installed windows XP. Windows XP did what I wanted...it corrected stability issues that I had with windows ME. I have been running XP for about 6 months now and I have not had a single error. It has never made a mistake. You must realize that although an OS is nearly perfect, you can still cause errors by not properly maintaining your computer (ie: newest drivers, latest patches, etc...). If you are still haveing troubles after this then it is just YOUR computer, NOT windows XP.

Best Microsoft OS yet!by - June 24, 2002

I had the misfortune of using Windows Me for the previous year and a half, by the end, my system was crashing more often than the stock market. I decided it was time to bite the bullet and upgrade to XP Pro. I have to tell you, the upgrade process was simpler than I thought it would be. It does require some preparation. I have a 950Mhz Athlon based system with a Nvidia GeForce2 MX graphics card, a range of software from games to programming and everthing in between. Before the upgrade, I ran Microsoft's Upgrade Advisor. It told me which programs were incompatible with XP. I removed those programs that could not be upgraded with new XP drivers. For example, Norton Antivirus 2001 will not protect XP systems due to the different file system structure. During the upgrade, the XP upgrade utility found drivers and then installed drivers for my printer(Brother HL-1450) and scanner(Epson Perfection 1240). When the upgrade was completed, about an hour, my system was more stable and ran faster than it ever had before. Also after the upgrade, I loaded Norton Antivirus 2002, which is compatible with XP. Memory leakage is no longer as serious an issue as it was before. If I do run into any problems due to low resources, a very rare occurrence, I simply use Task Manager to close any problem applications or change process priorities. As I become more acclimated with the new OS and change it to my desired configuration, It becomes more impressive. After running my system for some time, I decided to convert my file system from FAT32 to NTFS. After I did that, some of my programs stopped functioning properly. Just to be safe though, I had backed up my system before the conversion. Instead of changing back to FAT32 and reloading my system, I tried the compatibility wizard. The compatibility wizard allows older programs written for Microsoft 9x, NT and 2000 OS's to run properly on XP. One of the programs that had stopped working, was SimCity 3000 Unlimited. I first tried to emulate windows 95 and run the software, that didn't work. Then 98/Me, no dice. Finally, although it was not written to run on 2000, it worked perfectly in that emulation. Before upgrading to XP, I was seriously considering changing to the Mac G4 with OS X. Now, I will stick with my PC with its Microsoft XP OS.

Let's see, their defense's stance was that Windows won't work if the integration with IE is dissolved... under oath, mind you. That's perjury. Of course a simple demo of 98Lite would have destroyed that defense anyway. Suddenly Windows without the integral IE and other core structures is doable, no sweat. Send every white collar from Gates on down to prison for perjury. If you or I did it, we'd sure be away from our families faster than you could bat an eyelash for quite some time.

You can whine all you like about "MoneySoft" but the boys in Redmond finally got it right. I run an older system (550 PIII, 385 Ram, 100MhZ FSB) and made sure to check all my hardward specs first. Install went off without a hitch, the program is the most stable of any OS from Microsoft (and yes I have a multi boot and have used each and everyone of them) yet. The stability of the NT kernel with the ability to emulate 9x programs. Now there really is no longer a reason to use those overpriced and underfed Mac's. I do a large amount of graphic work / web design and cannot tell you how great it is to finally have this type of stability.
