Microsoft's mantra (or advertising line) for its new operating system, Windows Vista (formerly Windows Longhorn) is "Confidence, clarity, and connection." For you and me, that means a promise of greater stability and security within the OS, better graphics throughout, and an enhanced ability to share documents and files, including built-in P2P services. The software giant has followed the release of its Beta 1 with monthly interim builds that use coding intended for a future Beta 2 release. Specific features seen in these interim builds may or may not appear in the large-scale Beta 2 release or in the final version of Windows Vista (expected in late 2006). Here's a look at what we've seen thus far:
September 2005
October 2005
December 2005
February 2006
On July 27, 2005, Microsoft released Windows Vista Beta 1 to about 500,000 software developers worldwide. Microsoft wants to make sure that developers know how the new OS works before they put the finishing touches on the overall look and feel of Windows Vista.
After installing Beta 1 on our laptop, we were struck with a subtle déjà vu. Borrowing from Linux, Windows Vista runs all users at a Standard user level and creates a separate Administrator login, so even if you are the only user of the OS, you will still need to log in with Administrator privileges to do high-level work, such as changing the status of hidden or read-only files. Standard users should still be able to install and uninstall applications, provided they know the password for Administrator privileges. This extra effort should minimize the occurrence of spyware installing without your knowledge and remote-access exploits from taking control of your computer.

Borrowing from Apple Mac Tiger OS 10.4, Windows Vista incorporates enhanced desktop-search features throughout its new OS. You can search from the Windows Start menu or within applications, and you can also search within the new version of Internet Explorer 7. Also borrowing from Apple, Windows Vista does away with traditional file folders and allows you to "stack" related documents together. These virtual files can exist independent of where the actual file resides on the hard drive.
See our slide show for a detailed look inside the Beta 1 release.

Pretty bad...
Pros: It looks nice?
Cons: Overly complicated, not at all user friendly, annoying pop up Confirmation Window comes up all of the time, slow loading time, easy shortcuts are gone.
The 1st thing I noticed when I went to use Vista is it's slow loading time. I purchased a brand new Dell laptop; which is more powerful then my home PC; and XP loads faster on my older computer then Vista on my new. I understand why, but it is still annoying, when Vista was suppose to be faster. The 2nd is how much more complicated Windows Vista is over every other Windows platform. The easy to find shortcuts are gone. It takes a longtime to hunt down all of the settings to get them back. Which basically comes from having to set it back to the Classic view; which then removes the options for some of the more advanced shortcut and other cool features. This is a stupid change, because your new users will never be able to fully figure it out.
The number 1, all-time, most horrible feature is the Confirmation Window. Which comes up every single time you change or delete anything. If you delete a picture, the window pops up; if you change a setting, the window pops up; if a new software application is trying to update itself or you goto install manually, it will pop up. This gets so mega old, so mega fast!I had to search Google to find a way to shut it off. If there was no way, I would have sent the laptop back A.S.A.P!! At least I finally understand that Apple computer commercial! "Accept or deny?"
The overall system is bad. I heard about Vista years and years ago back when it was code named "Long Horn". Vista was suppose to change the world; much like how Windows 95 brought us out of the text-based world of DOS. So after the long wait, Vista has turned into a overly complicated, non-user friendly, overpriced and over-hyped OS. Now don't get me wrong, it is not the worst OS out there; and I normally love Microsoft products. I own the Zune, a Sprint Mogul, all kinds of their products. I just really, really hate Vista.
So basically, if you have XP, then a DO NOT UPGRADE! It's not worth the aggravation.
Now, let the bashing of my review begin!!!!
My 2 month old Dell has slowed down to a crawl. Vista wants to take it's sweet time loading EVERYTHING! I know that is the nature of a computer, but ****! It takes 4 months to load a video clip or image. 12 months to turn on and restart the computer. So many programs are not compatibility with Vista, so your out of luck. Microsoft doesn't care, they don't even both with good updates, just the same-old security updates. And have you ever asked for help from Microsoft directly? If you can even understand the rep, they don't have a clue.
And like Windows ME (Which WAS the worst Microsoft OS), Vista will undelete files you deleted and delete other files without your permission. I can't tell you how many times I have downloaded a file and it just disappeared!
Not to mention that Microsoft wants to know EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU! Every clip and movie that you watch, every image you view, anything and everything they can use to single you out. Windows is just one big spyware program and you just can't stop it. Disable one spyware app, and Windows just starts a new one.
I so badly want XP back, but at $300! I might as well buy another new laptop for that price! So I am stuck with either using Apple, which sucks and is not supported; or using Lunix, which is even less supported; or using Windows which has always and will always suck! What horrible choices!

why I cannot buy vista
Pros: it will bring windows in line with the competition albeit late
Cons: it won't let me copy my mp3 to my ipod
There's also this spiffy driver protection plan. With it, I know that any equipment I buy has to come from a vendor who has made a deal with Microsoft. I certainly wouldn't want to buy a network or graphics card from someone who doesn't have a contract with Microsoft. My network drive doesn't work now!
So I'm going to eventually buy another computer but it can't be running vista ; it really pisses me off. They said it would make my life easier but all it has done si make it more difficult to connect to my ipod and my network drive! I'll suvice using XP fro a few years I hope I can continue using PCs cos I build my own and itscheaper to upgrade. I'd love an apple but they are too expensive and I can't build one myself and buy new mother boards every few years. arghhhhhh

Oh My It doesn't work
Pros: Potential Graphics, and Layout
Cons: Nothing works.
My bank wouldn't support the "out of date" browser, so I used Firefox for Vista.
Three DVD players on my machine, not to mention
Media Center, and this OS wouldn't play a DVD.
Nero crashed before finalizing discs several times.
Everytime I opened IE I got an error: MapFile1:
Access Denied
Media Center is SSSLOW Choppy, and frustrating.
Windows XP was never this bad even pre-SP1.
MS has a lot of work to do by 1/07 if they expect people to pay $279+ for new OS.

A Windows by any other name is just as bad
Pros: Beautiful... JUST like Tiger. Easy navigation, attractive animations, so many goodies (again... just like Tiger)
Cons: Plagued by the evil albatross that will hang for years to come around its neck, "Explorer"
My opinion: It's not so much that it's "too little, too late", it's that it's the wrong answer to the question PC users have been screaming in the direction of Hwy. 520, "Can you make an OS that works?"
The average customer who knows little about the reasons (excuses) why Windows seems eternally plagued by spyware, security holes, viruses, etc. could care less. They are aging baby boomers who hear the taunts of their kids and grandkids who own Macs and finally break down because all of the reasons that PC Wintel freaks have given for not buying a Mac have broken down (including the hardware... read: Mactel) My parents bought an iMac with wireless keyboard and mouse. One cord... a power cord. Whatever problems their Mac has is minimal compared to their rotting PC. No, a mac running Tiger isn't perfect but my father knows that computers like cars have problems. He also understands that you shouldn't have to be a mechanic to operate a car and keep it running. It shouldn't be in the shop every week. It's nice if it's pretty and fun but it should operate reliably and consistently. Microsoft has established a track record of unreliablity, gaping security holes. With each new OS, the voices from Redmond cry out that they have plugged the ****... oops. Like a mother who learns to tune out her screaming toddler in the grocery store we are learning to ignore those declarations.
Whether or not Vista is the answer or not doesn't matter. On the outside it is Tiger tweaked and warmed over.
Admittedly, I'm not nearly as technically savvy as other reviewers here. What I DO know is marketing. Microsoft is losing the war with new computer buyers who are afraid of being shackled with issues such as hijacks, spying and viruses. Sexy people buy Macs because Macs are sexy (watch any movie with a computer in it). Kids like it because it's different than their parents boring PC. And now, seniors like it because it's easy and relatively trouble-free. I like it and a lot of other people as well because it works well (and it's cool and sexy which doesn't hurt)
Marketing is about perception and the biggest mistake Microsoft has made is introducing a sexier OS when people who own PC's and aren't savvy just want something that works. (By the way... the definition of a computer that "works" means one that you don't have to babysit and coninually add security updates to, hire the "Geeksquad" to fix and wring your hands over whether someone has hijacked you and is at this moment sipping Pina Coladas in the Caribbean at your expense). But then again, savvy people want that too. I guess somebody at Microsoft forgot to tell their Marketing department what people really want from their PC - not bling but something that fires on all cylinders.

My review on vista beta 1
Pros: The interface
Cons: Hard drive space
Many users like the new interface.
As for the programs vista comes with. im dissapointed right now ....I was expecting at least WMP11 . but I guess not in this beta.
The interface is actually not bad. I like the way they have it all organized and the way they put the Start menu. Clever idea actually.
when I first got my windows XP back in 2001 or so. I was like WOW!This is grsat! . and I thought they would not be able to make a better windows OS..guess I was wrong. lol.
Now the requirements for this beast of and operating system are a little wild from what I was looking at you need at least
1.5GHZ cpu
512RAM -1024 recommended
4-8GB hard drive space
G-force FX 5200 or better
Thats insane!! alot of games dont even require that much power. well i will be ready for it when its realeasd
when i first went to install this , i was kinda mad when they didnt give any specs of whats happening to my system . but when i seen there was only 2....yea...2 steps in the installion ,I was a little bit happier.
Anyways. just want to give my feed on this "interesting" operating system
"im probally going to kick my self stupid for saying this but "good job microsoft!" "

Mac OS X vs. Vista... STIUPID
Pros: Looks good, has good features
Cons: Nothing innovative
As for the Apple vs. Microsoft debate, anyone that is so brand loyal is only doing a disservice to themselves and others by supporting features that do not benefit either. In terms of securuity and stability, XP had more problems because of larger market share and inherent problems in the operating system (and they are in no particular order) -- go figure, it's a little bit of both!

When will the guys show some insight ??
Pros: They´ve spent a fair amount of time studying Mac OS
Cons: Not really new, shamful uggghhh !
Latest version of windows is only giving the idea that nothing really new can be achieved on an operative system. Instead of comming up with new ideas, (which I think customers usually expect and deserve to benefit from), they spend several months or probably years wasting their time on looking for ways to copy somebody else´s ideas, (it´s not the first time on microsoft´s part).
Probably, they may also come up with an ipod with an orange (or whatever looks like the orginal logo) stuck on the back too !

End All - Vista vs OSX (Objective Look)
Pros: Innovative Software Engines, Hardware Handling, Usability
Cons: No WinFS, Oversimplified Interface Features
2 - No Windows is not the most secure operating system. To that end neither is OSX. If you want network and internet security, use Linux....period. As for spyware, adware, and malware - that is at best an antiquated risk. Antivirus programs and antispyware programs utilize negligible system resources at this point and despite my 'agressive' use of the internet I have not had a single problem with Viruses or Adware on my windows machine for over a Year. To date MAC had an advantage in that its security architecture was better integrated into the OS and not external (amazing given MAC's moneymaking strategies). However Vista hopes to close this gap. However, it is the security issue that has caused me to dock 1 of the 2 points from this operating system.
3 - Compatability and Usability. MAC simply does not have the reverse compatability and 3rd party software database that Windows has. As far as usability goes - yes, MACs are easier and more straightforward to use. However, there is absolutely no way to tweak your OSX to preform how you PERSONALLY want it to. While this is an excellent feature for intro users and non-computer professionals, it becomes a problem at my level. I want to be able to set up my OS to respond how I want it to. Conclusion - if you dont want to bother understanding what is going on and just use an OS with limited features that 'works' go for OSX. However, if you want to sacrifice a little bit of this prestructured proprietary setup for professional software configuration and utilization Windows just can't be beat.
4 - The Crashing Issue. I own 2 macs and 4 PCs and this is what I have to say. I put XP on a PC 3.5 years ago, set it up as a print server/file server that also handles various rendering tasks, put it in my basement, and let it run. Other than Power Outages in my neighborhood its stability was 100%. Currently I am using a laptop with WinXP SP2 on it and running at least 10-15 different apps at the same time. In just over 4 months I have had 1 issue where a video-encoding program crashed because its interface was incompatible with Stardock WindowsBlinds, which I had installed to test out at the time. Other than this NOTHING - NO RANDOM RESTARTS, NO FREEZES, NO PROGRAM NOT-RESPONSIVENESS, NO NETWORKING FAILURES, NO CRASHES. The new Vista has improved Stability even more. Stop using this as an argument against Windows.
5 - More on Stability - With special attention given to the hard drive. Okay, in this category MACs just win. Their desktop search metadate and file system is simply efficient and amazing. NTFS with its ridiculous File Tables and file management system was absurdly slow and ineffiecient. The simple fact that fragmentation can cause a failure in a filesystem is unacceptable. Vista, which was supposed to be released witht he new WinFS was redesigned, for now, to work with a glorified NTFS. Until WinFS is released thats -1 for MS, I'm certain the experts would agree.
6 - Interface. With OSX the computer user was exposed to a more integrated, far reaching, and efficient interface. Why windows still hasn't developed a launching/application management mechanism faster than the taskbar/startbar is beyond me. The new Sidebar, more than anything, is a visual distraction. I am disappointed with the shortsighted banality of the MS Vista Interface, another -1 Microsoft.
7 - Hardware Management (Video). The new Longhorn Graphics Driver standard is exactly what the industry needs. Finally, a company has realized and implemented every videophiles dream - lossless scalability. Way to go Microsoft. Say goodbye to the pixel.
8 - Software Engines - I will wait until I have become more experienced with Indigo, Avalon, etc. to fully judge these but as far as I see there is little, if anything to complain about. It can handle everything an application/productivity developer ever wanted to see.

Windows, One of the best ..........
Pros: Lots of new features on the way..........
Cons: none yet...
OK next..
Manipulating the OS, Yes there is more manipulating and configuration in windows because you can do more with that OS then OSX. A person can change the way the cd drive response or how an application opens, all the way down to modifying the OS or even hardware drivers to suet that particular person needs.. OSX will not let you do much of that or even any of it. Apple put you in this little box and keep you there. As far as the design from each OS that can be always modified by add-ons/plug-ins from any website..CNET have some great ones. Crashes, freezes, disk fragmentation, forced reboots is something that both windows and apple OS have a issue with. Supporting both platforms for a little over 7 years now not much have change.
OK next.
Gaming, XBOX 360, sorry but windows got that hands down .. (apple cant touch this!!)
OK next.
Hardware.. Apple hardware is pretty good with Two dual-core 2.5GHz , 512MB, 250GB drive and a Gforce 6600 with 256MB Nice!! A lot better than what a was supporting when I was working for them? Will now any thing to can do , I can do better, I can do everything better than you? Most gamers I come across today have dual Pentium Processor Extreme 3.6Ghz Edition with 1.5 Gb of ram 300GB harddrives with a Gforce 7800 all in a Mid tower, half the size and half the price for what apple is asking for? Oh ya job?s saying apple perform much more efficiently than a pc..ha! ha! and yet he?s using Photoshop software ,,apple owns adode and that?s pretty much the only software out there that?s going to run ok on a mac. Business applications, database software, networking appls and any other gaming software will smoke a apple by far. And if you live in the bay area bring the T.V crew because I got a PC to proof it.

Look, I'm a heavy computer user, though not a complete geek. I use my computer at work (Win XP) for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. I access the internet, use basic office applications, use Gimp for image editing here and there (nothing too heavy), and I run some trading software (I work in a brokerage house).
Then I go home to my WinXP machine (SP1) and do everything from watching porn to cruising the web (Firefox). I record music (Sonar Producer 3 with an Alesis Firewire sound card) on my computer. I'm currently mixing down a band's demo where some of the songs have 32 tracks going with effects. This would have been UNHEARD of until the past 5 or so years. I watch DVDs, listen to music, rip CD's, sync to my Creative Zen Touch MP3 player, etc. I access the internet via wireless, as well as through an ethernet cable.
I've been doing this for years, and jesus christ it's not that difficult. Yes, I have had my computer crash, obviously. Big whoop. How often does it really happen? If I'm doing some really intense work with my music software, maybe I'll crash once a week (but then again, some of my software is bootleg hehehe). Again, big whoop. I save my work very frequently, which is good practice anyway, Windows or Mac. Especially when people are paying you for your time.
Now, I bought my computer used for $600 including a 15" flatscreen monitor. It's a custom built, P4 2.8mhz, with 512 MB RAM, 128 MB video card. I got a great price admittedly, but I think I could have assembled it myself for let's say $1200. My friend, who does video work, bought an Apple G5. It was the latest model out as of something like 6 months ago. He got the whole video package including Final Cut Pro and so on. If I'm not mistaken, he spent close to $3000.
Now don't get me wrong, his computer looks beautiful. It better for 3 grand. And OSX admittedly does have a sleek look to it, might be easier to navigate, and might even give you a "happy ending" when you're done using it. But it's not all that.
My friend constantly busts my chops over how crappy Windows is, and how often it crashes. But the truth is, it DOESN'T crash that often, though it does happen admittedly. So my friend buys this G5, and right away, problem after problem. Crashes to the point that he has to constantly pull the power plug out. He sends it back for servicing (and btw, Apple has a horrible and expensive customer service setup), and it turns out that there was a defect in some piece of hardware. They replaced it, no big deal, and now his computer runs "perfectly", according to him. And I don't blame them for a hardware issue, it happens to every company. Anyway, according to my friend, no problems whatsoever, ever. Period. Unless, of course, I come over. Which I did 3 days ago, with a video that I wanted to show him. I downloaded this video (no, not porn), and burned a disk. It was an AVI file. Threw it in his computer, and Quicktime launches, and won't play. I guess he doesn't have the right codec. So we go to the Quicktime site and attempt to download the latest version. Then all hell breaks loose. He can't quit programs, can't eject my disk, etc. So he forces things down, eventually manages to restart his computer, but still can't play this simple video clip (though he managed to eject the disk). We said "the hell with it" and went to a friend's house, who has like a $50 eMachines or something. Video plays no problem. Several months ago, after he had his computer fixed, he was working on a video project. When I came over, he wanted to show it to me, and of course his computer crashed then too. Does it happen often? No. But does it NEVER happen, hell no. Even though he says it never happens, I personally watched his $3000 computer crash twice, and I'm not over his house very often.
Also, I worked at another job two years ago or so, where we did all our video editing on Windows machines. No problems. There was a graphic designer in the house that had the company's only Mac. It was also the latest machine at the time, I believe it was a dual G4 or G5. Huge, beautiful monitor. Constant crashes. Not sure what his issue was.
So long story short, yes Windows has it's issues, but I don't want to hear this BS that OSX never crashes. I also don't want to hear that BS that Windows constantly crashes. You might have issues here and there, but it depends what you're doing with your machine. Don't blame viruses on Windows, blame it on the morons who create the viruses. Should Windows be better prepared? You bet. But as is, Windows works. With people actively trying to break it, of course they're going to succeed some of the time.

Pros: Clean Look, Easier to find files, 3D windows and mini applications
Cons: Some minor things
Microsoft is coming up with new look. Windows are transparent, like a glass. It helps you to focus on the content of the window. There are so many great things about this OS. Microsoft will offer support for auxiliary display. For instance, suppose on your laptop you want to see your new email messages, contacts, buddy list and other basic information, without turning on the laptop. Manufacturer will offer auxiliary display on the laptops and the desktops, so the users can get the essential daily information without turning on everything. If you are looking to buy a PC, I?ll recommend wait til second half of 2006. It will be the best time to buy a computer. Today?s hardware and especially the CPU?s are getting better and better such as, Pentium D dual-core processors. But the Microsoft OS Windows XP which was release in 2001 is kind of old for new hardware.

Pros: New Look???
Cons: Failure to Improve
Concerns with Windows...
Appearance - I have always liked to judge the looks of an operating system. I would like to point out that Vista's new look looks a bit more impressive than previous editions of Windows OSes, but it does not come close to matching the visual masterpiece that is Mac OSX's Tiger.
MORE IMPORTANT - Security - one of the most important aspects of an operating system is its ability to keep the computer safe. In recent stories, it is said that a beta of "Longhorn" accidentally surfaced. Microsoft claimed that Longhorn, the codename, would put a stop to all viruses on Windows OS computers. The story also says that the Longhorn OS was immediately and easily penetrated and stood no chance against incoming viruses. Although it is a beta, a first impression on users is very important. Also, how good is Microsoft at being secure when an illegal version has leaked out so eaisly.
Hardware Requirements - The hardware requirements for Vista are absurd. Its recommending 1GB of RAM and much faster processor (2.???GhZ compared to 1.3ish in XP)
Outdated - Windows Vista would have been top of the line in 2003 maybe, but in the later half of 2006, it is just too late and weak compared to MacOSX. Tiger has been released and has thrived and a newer version 10.5 will be released in the next year, possibly near the time that Vista comes out.
Windows Vista is simply not up to the standards of a smooth, visual, secure, and idiot-proof operating system and will probably need severe upgrades to even put it in the same sentence at MacOSX 10.4 Tiger.

A promising start to take back the lead...
Pros: Taking some of the best ideas from the new APPLE OS, Microsoft is making a strong play for the elegent OS that Apple has dominated of late.
Cons: Not enough changes where it counts,(i.e. the graphic interface).
While the truth remains, you get more for your money in PC, Apple has been making gains in the idea that "you get what you pay for." The security plagued Windows OS has been too slow to react to changes in the industry and is losing the design battle as well.
I rate the VISTA beta high because I see some potential to make a drive for the lead once again. Even the new IE Explorer shows that Microsoft has heard the suggestions of the commoners and is making the appropriate changes (could we be seeing active desktop widgets next?)
When it boils down, Microsoft is playing a catch-up game to beat Apple at their own game. But that being said, Apple is the graphical interface winner. To make real headway, Microsoft has to do more than update the security issues in the OS, they need to change the way people feel when they look at Windows. Apple is elegant and intuitive...Windows...not so much.
My fingers are crossed that as the latest builds are released we can see that VISTA is a true competitor for the OS King. In then end, VISTA will be the determining factor of my staying with WINDOWS as my primary PC or if I will make the final conversion to MAC.

Pros: Intuitive advances in file organization, and better graphics
Cons: ....not sure...waiting to see...
As to all the Mac-aniacs out there...get over yourselves!!! Jeez...Owning a Mac today (other than iPods, I firmly believe iPods are superior) seems to give their owners some club card into the "cool computing" club. I was curious over the weekend about the Mac and I messed around on the Brother-in-laws G4 notebook. I did not see anything (other than the cool interface) that blew Windows away.
Certainly there are some inovations (which I think Vista replicates more or less) that give Mac OS a slight edge over Windows, but over all I'm not convinced that Macs are superior in any way than Windows based systems.
Don't get me wrong, Macs aren't bad...I just think that they are often billed as the greatest machines around when in reality it is the opposite of the old saying "don't judge a book by its cover" (people judge Macs by their cover and because they look cooler than most PCs, therefore they are better). I can't wait to see what happens to Macs when Steve Jobs retires and all the fancy covers come off...have to wait and see I guess.

its the stupid user's fault, not MS'
Pros: many things that normal users don't use. except the new search.
Cons: need to have a good/fast PC to run it smooth, should be more modern looking
I mean when has a security hole actually affected you (more than 1 or maybe 2 times?)
If you are like my clients which are idiots when it comes to PC's and click YES on all the frigin popups that appear telling you its gonna install a "system optimzer" or an atomic clock synchronizer or whatever all the crapload of thigs some company's invent then its YOUR problem for being such an idiot (i'm not saying you do or you are)
I dont have either an AV or a firewall(except for windows firewall, MS Antispyware, and my router's firewall) installed on my PC's and until now i have NEVER ever had a problem with it and it runs as smooth as the first time i used it.
And i know im not infected.. just look at yoour msconfig startup programs or the processes you are currently running and you can get an idea if your computer is clean
And if you have ever been affected by any security hole IE or microsoft has had( i was by MSBlaster only), then think about it, who do you think will spend their time on finidng a hole in a Mac's OS and code a worm so that probably 50 computers ( it could even be called a coincidence for a MAC worm to actually generate an IP of a MAC computer) out of the 4% of the computer OS market share get infected?. Ok maybe not 4%... but 3%.

Wow! It only took them 5 years!!
Pros: Better looking
Cons: Same old Windows
5 years is a lifetime in the computer world. What have they been doing in all this time? Not much except giving its users a rehashed OS with a couple new tricks, although I will hold off too much judgement until final release. Meanwhile Apple releases updated versions of its OS every month with a major update every year. You tell me, which sounds like the better company who actually cares about its users?
Im not tooting the Mac OS horn here because no OS is perfect, but I dare you to try & find a Mac user thats unhappy. The reason Mac people are "mac freaks" is because we have all been down that frustrating Windows road & have found something that is soo much better & we just want people to not be afraid of change & know they have a choice.
Because frankly, every "switcher" I know felt like a sucker for having used Windows for soo long.

Just Keep on talking
Pros: Looks pretty slick.
Cons: Costs too much in hardware upgrade
So many people here giving their opinions on this OS when they havent even tried it yet.. Or if they have then I'm sure most of them downloaded an illegal copy. Oh well...I'm gonna join in.
I'm not a beta tester but I also dont think it's worth my time downloading (legally or illegally).
Why should I upgrade? I have Windows XP, which is so much better than Windows 98. When I was on Windows 98 reformatting and reinstalling were a 6 month routine task. Thank goodness XP came along (actually XP seems to be just a prettier version of 2000).
Now since the release of SP2 I have only reformatted once and it was my fault not the Operating system. I've been running very well with no problems with SP2. Only thing I've noticed is slower shutdowns.
It's about time we were taken off of the 9x kernel and put on something stable with 2000/XP.
I just upgraded to a larger harddrive and 512 MB RAM a few months ago so I could play Unreal Tournament 2004. Now you're telling me that I have to once again double that, maybe quadruple, so I can run an Operating System? No thanks. Give me one good reason as to why I should choose Vista over XP.
I have everything I need. A handful of good games, some of which are old and run alot better on 98 but I can deal with that. I have Dreamweaver, Apache webserver for testing php/msyql stuff, IE, Firefox, instant messaging, e-mail, Windows Media Player, Nero, Winamp... Starting to get the picture? It's not the OS that's keeping me productive. It's the software on it.
So who cares of it's going to have a "glassy" appearance with translucent effects. Is that worth $200 in software and close the same in hardware upgrades? Let's not forget we will have 7 different flavors to choose from. *** is Windows Vista Home Premium?
At first the only reason I saw to upgrade would have been the WinFS.. Now it's only going to come out as an Upgrade about a year later?
All this talk about Windows Vista will open the doors for Linux and Mac. Well I have to disagree. Well maybe Linux. Macs are still expensive so dont expect anyone running to the Mac unless Apple lowers their prices.
As for linux, I have tried a few distrobutions but how much software do you see on the shelf with the "Made for Debian" badge printed on the front of the box?
I suspect most people will hold off the upgrade and will ask the same questions I have asked in this little opinion of mine.
The most unfortunate thing is, I'm a computer technician and I have to keep up with my customers and I will eventually have to get me a copy of this beast. Anyone who looks to buy a new PC after the relase of Vista will most likely get a Dell/Compaq/HP loaded with Windows Vista Home (or if their lucky they may get the coveted "Premium" edition). If I ever have to do any type of work on a machine I'm going to need to learn my way around it. And from what I can tell MS did a such a good job in taking away menus, changing the appearance, that I'm going to have do a bit of learning the system before I can start work.
Infact I cant wait until it's release and I hope its a huge embarrassment for Microsoft
I was on a rant and my comment "It's about time we were moved off the 9x kernel"... was a bit of a stupid comment since 2000 and XP have been out for 4 or 5 years lol.
Anyway... Why Upgrade?

Slick Look, Slimmed Down Release, Obvioustly it's a Apple Flavored Windoze!
Pros: Looks Great, 64 bit, with a Simpler User Friendly Touch!
Cons: Not a ground up 64bit kernel! The Legasy Lives On! Not different enough from XP or NT roots!
With computer wars going on right before our eyes, will Vista be enough? Will it run on both IBM PowerPC and x86 machines? Well it's going to need to eventually and some form of Vista or other OS is powering their new game box. We know Sony, NEC and Toshiba playing with with PowerPC processors, maybe even Dell and HP. Will some form of Vista be competing against Mac OS-10 flavor of the month on everything new in computers? What's going to happen to all the old WinBoxes out there? Stuck with WinXP? Will Stevie (Fanboy) Jobs be able to quit pouting long enough to license out his "Soon to be Converted" x86 OS to other computer manufacturers and for use on all x86 machines? I mean we'll soon have "Apple Mac Intels" and probably "Sony PowerPCs" (eventually). We're talking major shakeup. I hope Microsoft has been engineering a better 64bit OS to run these future machines, because "Vista" won't do it against the ever improving flavors of Mac OS-10 coming out! You can gift wrap an inferior product with pretty paper, but in the end you still have "Winblows". And that "S#*ks"!
Lots of fresh faces at Microsoft going a different direction with new ideas and technology. Yes, I'm talking Xbox 360 (PowerPC risc proc)! Now Sony says, "They couldn't wait 25 years for the technology leap to power their game box. Will the "Cell" processor be running more than a game box for Sony? I think so. How about Microsofts game box. What form of "Vista or beyond" will be running on it? Obviously they have done some OS tinkering, no doubt some code swapping with "Vista". But is that all? Something (not Vista)has been keeping their code slaves and wariors busy. Fresh blood brings inovation hopefully some of that fresh blood is being put into a trully new Microsoft OS (release date to be announced).
Both companies and their leaders past up on buying the only ground up built 64bit Media OS ever built, that was "BeOS"! The kernel alone was worth alot more than "Palm" paid for the whole company and it ran on both processor achitectures. Today with all the extreme changes taking place, that kind of design work is priceless. What a shame it went to waste. It would have been a good base to build a better Vista on.
I still use "BeOS" and even though it's developement stopped. I still appreciate the ease, speed, and feel of that system and it compares to OS-10 (but the "BeOS" kernel was better than FreeBSD one Apple used). But that's all behind us, and it now looks like we may have better competion (from Apple) to fuel Microsoft into true inovation. Hopefully we will all be as pleasantly surprised by "Vista" as we will be, with the "New Xbox 360" coming out of Microsoft in November! Fresh and very powerful, if they can match this nice bit of engineering with a better O.S. release than the way Vista looks now, I'll buy it.
OK I have been using all of these Operating System and I do have Windows Vista Beta 2 upgraded from Beta 1! (be prepared for a very long install, about as long as Suse Linux or Red Hat Fedora!)
I also run Mac OS-X Tiger on a G-5 Mac! Along with that of course I have two other computers running many flavors of Linux and Windows 98 and XP SP2 in multi boot!
Each has it's unique problems and benefits! Normally Linux is a b**ch setting up until more recently with distros (flavors) like Ubuntu, Mepis, or my now all time favorite "PCLinux"! Up and running with all drivers and programs in under 20 to 30 minutes!
No Windows install is as fast, simple, and includes everything you need to surf the net, edit pictures and videos of all types, do Office Work, and look as beautiful out of the box with all the features! Granted Vista has lots of new super "Eye Candy", but even that is now being overshadowed by an OpenGL add-on desktop manager, called "Compiz with XGL" (similiar to "Aeroglass" or Java "Looking Glass"! Your Desktop simply comes alive with 3-D effects and ease of use! Impossible to decribe! Incredible! ! !
Security well as of right now it's a tie between Linux and OS-X! Ease of ownership and simplicity, well Mac OS-X takes that one easily over all of them. But ole Steven Jobs is just as interested in minding your information and what you do as Microsoft with Windows it's Corporate Buddies! The new Intel Macs even have a Big Brother Intel Spy Chip right on board and plenty of DRM as well!
In this day and age Corporate Greed and Control are more of a threat than any Government! That's why anything I do on the internet, is on Open Source Linux (BTW OS-X came out as proprietary open source, but it's locked up so tight now, you need dynamite to open it up to just look at it)! ! !
Vista is even worse in this respect and in reality it is just XP re-arranged and infused with Corporate Spyware and the ability to switch features on and off remotely. The Security additions are for them not YOU or I!
As you use Vista or even the new Office Betas you get the distinct impression you're being animal trained with a "Carrot and a Whip"! Do something right, you get rewarded with Pleasurable Glitz! Do something wrong and the Glitz is gone and it returns you to Pre-98 Windows speed! It's flat out presented like drug eye candy to get and keep you addicted!
Futhermore it will have a class system built right into it! You'll have the "Dime Store" "Ford Pinto" version all the way up to the "Rolls Royce Limo" version! So for extra bucks or you padding their palm or Corporate Interest, you'll have less scrutiny and more glitz! So it's sort of like the Caste System in India. Won't be just Home and Pro Edition! For a price you'll be able to buy the Corporate big brother off or have the Glitzy Aeroglass stay on all the time and bypass the horse training! LOL
So longer story shorter! I'll take Open Source Linux! Not only because it'll look better, but because it will flat out be safer all the way around for "We the People"! I'll just leave the Corporate Ant Farm OSes for the rest of you morons!

Welcome to Windows 2005
Pros: Enhanced Security, New developer tools
Cons: Not all additions available at time of release, Same windows feel, Confusing Interface
Being a developer and implemetor for many types of systems I have discovered Microsoft's Windows Operating system to have one of the most simple GUI's out there. With it's ability to be customized and it's ultimate compatibility on many levels, Microsoft's product is winner. However, there are some short comings.
Windows Vista is a "little" better than XP in that it explains itself much better. From navigating through the menu's and usual stuff in windows. Even though I knew to "double-click" I found the icons confusing in that they feel more like a web interface rather than your usual Explorer icons. Organization of Icons is attempted but yet to fully functional. I noticed that I was able to recursively search through all my files on my computer with a simple Search Box located at the top. A feature prevailent in Apple's OS that is key for novice and advanced users alike.
Driver development is proceeding very well however those with older devices will be forced to upgrade to current devices with Windows Vista support. I found that 85% of drivers that are written for Windows XP work wit Vista, however some of them caused Vista to lock-up similar to the first release of Windows 98. "Uh-oh" you might add, but it is up to the Vendor of your devices to update their drivers to function correctly. Hopefully the release of Windows new API tool will allow faster development.
Adapting to Windows Vista will be simple. It will be just like the previous version with a new look. Not much functionality for novice users will be noticed. Certain background tasks will handled differently, but remember Microsoft cannot release it's software into it's OS enviroment like other OS's can. Users might be confused as to why they need a Media Player, Buisness productivity software and other usueful software after they have installed the operating system.
Overall I think this is a promising product for Microsoft but they will have to please many different types of computer users to be a popular operating system. A 32-Bit version will be available for those still on older 32-Bit systems, but to ensure better OS operating and security 64-Bit is recommened.

Pros: Completely revamped OS, 2000x times better than XP
Cons: Somewhat outdated compared to OS X Tiger , scroll bars are invisible (almost)
---
IE7: I like how MS completely redesigned the browser. It takes on the folders look in Vista~Longhorn. Microsoft realized that tabbed browsing is commonplace now, so it added that in. There's always a little tab next to the last tab to launch a new tab, which is really convenient. If you want to search Google instead of MSN, go to Google's website and click the link below the search bar.
---
Overall, I think this has been the greatest release of Windows. It holds strong competition agains Mac OS X Tiger. When I go to college in 2010, I will get a computer based on marketshare, reliability, etc. What I mean is that it's the battle between Apple and MS...the one with the best OS will have its OS running on my computer in college. If MS keeps its head up like this, then i might buy a Windows desktop. If Apple breaks a window, then that will be my 2nd Apple computer.
i installed MS Office 2003 on to my beta. Now Vista decided to reboot itself every 5 minutes. And it nearly fries my dell. I love it, but i can't stand using a computer that reboots itself in every 5 minutes. Guess my Mac mini comes to the rescue (i'm NOT using my dad's Mac Classic as my primary computer).
On saturday i dual booted my dell with vista and xp. now vista wont work!!! xp works fine. is there any cause to this?

This could be great
Pros: Catching up with the competition for both UI and back end
Cons: Is this another painful Rip-and-Replace migration?
How much of a step is a good question. Most organisations endured the 2000 to XP migration reluctantly. Most of them were forced to do the change to support 'improved' and 'more reliable' back-end products such as Active Directory, SQL, BizTalk, and even Office Suite 2003 etc. If they did not they would risk being unsupportable or realising only limited features from their huge investments.
And the route from 2000 to XP was not a good one. One can only be concerned that the installation of Vista is going to be another '2000 to XP', i.e. another of Microsoft's famous rip-and-replace upgrade strategies. I remember with nightmares the Exchange 5.5 to 2000/2003 migration route and in fact between any of the Microsoft products that I have used to date. Most have left me with sleepless nights, high levels of stress, and lots of lost data.
The thought of touching 10K desktops or similar to add search, better graphics, and a whole heap of likely help desk calls doesn't inspire me either. Vista will of course replace XP. By stealth it will work it's way into the desktop: new PC's will have it installed, all the latest Microsoft software will require it, and Intel's marketing team will want to sell you shiny new dual core processors to run it.
This is of course just a Beta and an early one at that, so I would hope that by the final product automated deployment will be an option (and not something that requires an exclusive proprietary Microsoft architecture). I would also hope that the final Vista product is more than a few UI tweaks and rewritten Linux code.

The new changes will help keep the operating system up-to-date with new technology.
Pros: Longhorn , Vista, Vishta, Mishta, it is still Windows and a lot of us will have to deal with it. Perhaps we love the flexibility that it provides.
Cons: Late, late, late,.....sang to the tune of "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog."
If the inclusion of the WinFX technology keeps its promise of letting us build more secured, reliable, scalable, versionable, and more deployable applications then we can say that Microsoft efforts are commendable.
If the new Windows Communication Foundations are really going to provide a unified API for different classes of connected systems, then we can say that Microsoft efforts in keeping up with new demands in operating system technologies are commendable.
The problem is that we are dealing with Microsoft the keeper of the ?general computing faith? and at times this proves to be too much even for Redmond.
All in all, things look promising for the users of the Windows Operating System.
All this, barring the Mac-O-Phile Sheep Heads, mostly teenagers such as Kevshootz, who will hover over this reviews and give a silly rating of (1). Their only contribution: They will chant, recite, regurgitate their battle cry ?Get a Mac? or ?Windows Sucks? and then spew out some nonsense about this operating system which always shows that they have never touched this operating system. This operating system is not perfect, but you don?t need to have a fit of self-induced stupidity about it. Stop living in the past. Get a life. Find time to do some computing. It will be good for you, really.
I always hope to find new info about the subject from other reviewers but with so many Mac Sheep Heads hovering over these reviews it is hard get a realistic assessment of the impact that the beta try outs are having on different users. ? A Brain is a Terrible Thing to Waist.?

It doesn't seem that much different than XP
Pros: Being able to search anywhere, new graphics, and hopefully better than XP
Cons: Not much is known about the new OS, so I can't really say, I just hope that it will be better than XP.
Some of you guys that take the time to argue over an opinion, seriously need to get a life. There is more to life than argueing about what MS copied from Mac, and vise versa. It's pointless, I'm pretty sure that the majority of us haven't even touched the new MS Vista. All of you MS users: um, do you really think you have to defend MS so well? Especially if it's as great as you say it is? Mac users: Don't make quick judgements on the new OS from MS. Nobody knows if anything will change from now until the OS's release.

Nothing we haven't seen before
Pros: Slick new interface, actual picture of the file for icons, improved search capabilities
Cons: Unoriginal, No new File System, Name (Yuck),
Let me first tell you what I really like about Vista. The new interface is much better than anything they have had before. You actually see the file instead of an icon in explorer. This is a big time saver and much smarter than using a resource file for the job. The search feature is much better.
Now for the bad. Nothing in Vista looks original. They copied many interface designs from Apple. The search interface is a feeble attempt to copy Spotlight?s interface. No new File System! They really messed up on this one. Longhorn was going to be amazing cuz of the new file system. Now that it has been pulled you can expect XP's flaws to plague you in Vista. If the File System is the same, the OS will have to run extremely similar to the way XP runs. Now about the name. Vista? What were they thinking? This just sounds cold and uninviting and more importantly un-cool. Lets face it cool is the name of the game.
Have to wait to see if Vista really is a better OS than XP when it ships. By then I'll be running my copy on my Intel Mac. Who says you can't have it all?

Pros: New graphics engine, search features
Cons: No dramatic improvements
In addition, it seems that microsoft has "borrowed" from others - in particular Apple. I use a PC, but Mac is looking better and better all the time.

Get off of Microsoft's back
Pros: Graphics, features, security, load time
Cons: don't complain till it goes Gold
Yes Microsoft has stolen some of Apple's ideas, but they're not exactly revolutionary ideas...better graphics, better searching, etc... those are given things that operating systems should always be upgrading. Let's think about Apple switching to x86, moving past their stubborn 1 button mouse, etc... Companies steal other companies ideas, DEAL WITH IT!
Now for the name, Windows Vista, I don't see what's so bad about it. How about you find something wothwhile to complain about other than the name for the program, IT DOESN'T MATTER! Nothing personal, but naming every OS update after a jungle animal isn't exactly revolutionary creative thinking either.
I think Windows Vista has a lot of potential and people need to get off of Microsoft's back. I am a software engineer with plenty of IT experience and I like Windows and OS X both. You can easily embrace both sides of this stupid feud created by bored geeks world wide. So please, just chill.

Sound like Mac OSX Tiger?
Pros: Its progress, good features I assume, but nothing more than what Apple already has
Cons: Apple already has a WORKING version of this OS called Tiger! When wil people learn to switch to Mac??? (Read extended review for why Vista will struggle)
I assume that Vista will be a switch to a UNIX operating system (as planned with Longhorn). Apple already went through this transition. Becuase of the different background software, old Windows apps will not work properly with Vista, so you will need ALL new apps! It took Apple 2 to 3 tries before they got out all the bugs, I cant imagine what will happen with Windows!
Windows is SHOULD crash, although they have enough users that it might not make a difference. Microsoft is YEARS behind other OS's like Mac OSX 10.4 and Linux. They are selling an old product with bugs (dont expect the beta version to eliminate every problem). Google is now starting to do research on a desktop search which will change the way computers work.
Watch out Microsoft, if you don't be careful, sooner or later people will realize what a weak OS Windows is!

XP with a facelift
Pros: Color scheme/new Bliss backdrop, Easier install (especially partitioning)
Cons: Same old OS with more clutter, desktop search is not "live" (ie Spotlight), 2GB install
We got the Vista Beta (still can't figure out why they used this name) same day, burned it and installed it. Gotta say that myself and my 6 Mac-hating PC coworkers were all pretty unimpressed. Played with it for about an hour and realized it's basically...XP with a new skin. With 4 years of dev and another 1 year to go...we expected to see anything revolutionary. Heck, my dock in Tiger is still cooler, and something that Vista can't/won't do inherently in the OS.
Not to mention the 1.5 hour install on a 3ghz/1 gb RAM machine....clean code??? I think not. If this rather dull Beta is just a beta (at 2GB), I can't wait to see how bloated the release is.
As for the copying issue...sure MS is using Apple's innovation - Apple beats em to it every release. One wonders why MS can't copy the useful stuff in a useful way (desktop search, graphics that don't take a top end video card, etc.).
Overall...I wouldn't say disappointed by the new OS, but with 5 years, billions of dollors, and a darn good example to copy...you'd think they coulda kicked it up a notch.

Do The editor knows what he is talking about?
Pros: STILL BETA 1, UNKNOWN
Cons: STILL BETA 1 , UNKNOWN
what the??, I have been using 'LIMITED' user account since my NT 3.51 days, all of suddent, this is a 'NEW' thing now? and this is 'borrowing from Linux'? hello?
By the way, it is NOT called 'Standard' user account, it is called *LIMITED* user account.
I am not come here to say if VISTA is better or worse than other OS, just that the editor or whoever write this 'REVIEW' thing (..uh.. review on a Beta.. LMAO) clearly doesn't know a thing.

Good stuff!
Pros: virtual folders, security, "breadcrumbs view"
Cons: will take some getting used to interface changes
virtual folders is awesome as well. this might be the first time i actually let Windows do the organising for me. And it's great that one can use the task pane to change criteria on the fly (seeing only files of particular types, or particular date ranges, etc).
As for charges of copying: well, everyone copies the best features of everyone else. Mac OS X has its fair share of ideas from Windows and other programs as well. Task-based Control Panel, for example. And Search has been around on the Microsoft side since MSN Desktop Search.
And surprisingly, it seems to be a very speedy performer as well. From what I can see, it's at least as fast as XP on the same machine. Very optimised.
Of course, this is just Beta 1, so it'd be interesting to see what new things will come up in Beta 2 -- THAT would really be something worth testing out!

The world's most widely used operating system is getting even better
Pros: Microsoft is listening to customers and working seriously on reliability and security. Vista brings new workflow features to the shell, and is the ship vehicle for a number of new technologies.
Cons: It has been a long time since Microsoft released a desktop OS.

4 Years and 1000's of developers = not much
Pros: Breadcrumb address bar and .NET finally included
Cons: Right now, it looks pretty darn terrible, no WinFS, not easy to get Media Center Edition, no built in Anti-Virus, etc.
Where is our long awaited WinFS? Where are things like built-in Anti-Virus and Media Center capabilities (for those who have TV tuner cards)? Why does starting IE and explorer take at least 1-2 seconds when it should be instant? From my point of view, we've been running windows for years and years, and it is still ridiculously difficult to network Windows, secure Windows, and have a normal day's work without memory problems or Explorer.exe crashing (and I run with 3gb of ram and a 3.2 Ghz dual CPU). I don't hear anything about fixing/including/or improving on these things. That's why for me, I see little value in Vista (at this point).
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Vista will somehow manage to be cool when the OS does finally come out. And thank goodness, they finally included .NET (after years of begging), but I would ask you to please not get caught up in the marketing hype and instead ask, "where is our money going?"
Also, I'm sorry but the name "Vista" is not a good name. The polls on this very site prove it. Personally, I think the name is fruity.
All in all, that's why I give Windows Vista 3 out of 10 stars.
Thanks for reading.

Still Light-years behind
Pros: runs programs for older MS OS's; better UI
Cons: still doesn't catch up to Mac OS X; terrible name
After years of waiting, finally Microsoft will complete its next Operating System. Despite their seemingly unlimited resources, Microsoft took way too long to develop Windows Vista and it still looks as if Mac OS X is still far superior. Microsoft is planning to do in 2006 what Apple has been doing for years. I use both a Mac and a PC, and the Macintosh Operating System is easier and more fun to use and it is much more productive. It's also great for programming. Microsoft is adding features that Mac OS has had for such a long time, such as built-in desktop search. Also, what really ticks me off is that Microsoft planned to include all these great, "revolutionary" new features like WinFS, the new file system, and it pulled it! WinFS, which was once one of the hallmarks of the next MS OS, is being deleted! The only thing that will make Windows Vista have an advantage over Mac OS X and Linux is that most software is written for Windows. Otherwise, Microsoft has been behind in development- Mac OS X already has features such as built-in desktop search, translucent windows graphics, and advanced picture organization that Microsoft is just adding now! Let's face it, Windows just is not on par with Mac in every way except for software compatibility. I've had it with Microsoft- I'm going to Mac OS X for good.
Windows Vista looks like it will be a fantastic addition to the Windows line, especially in terms of its enhanced, appealing new graphical user interface. But lets face the facts--- one of the FIRST things said in the C|Net video is that Vista BORROWS from Apple Tiger OS!!! Everything that Microsoft will include in Vista are features that were almost entirely included in Mac OS X (tiger) for YEARS! Sure, the Vista OS looks fantastic-it looks to be just as aesthetically pleasing as Mac OS X- but all of those fantastic "new" features have already been in other operating systems, namely Mac.
Oh yeah, by the way, even though Vista looks fantastic graphically, it will take a gig of RAM and top line specs just to do it! The old performance hog is back in action!

You should STILL wait for the first Service Pack!
Pros: Sounds like it's borrowing the best from the rest in security and desktop searching; promised greater attention to clean code and stability on release.
Cons: Where's the beef, i.e. WinFS? MS is playing feature/security catch-up ball, and is there anything in this that really warrants a new "sur-name?"
