    "stability?"

by pjcamp on February 8, 2008

    Pros: who cares about features

    Cons: could you assess stability?

Summary: I have a Thinkpad that I cannot use because of the hazard of data loss. In four months, I have had to do a complete system restore 6 times. Every time has been due to instability in Vista. Instability to the point of data loss. Not only that, but the improved video driver update keeps trying to force on me blanks the screen except in safe mode and cannot be removed except by a full system restore. Even stepping back to an earlier point doesn't get rid of it.

Your review focuses on features and performance. These are minor issues with Vista. It is the most unstable piece of crap since Windows ME and I would really like to know whether Microsoft has addressed those issues. If they haven't, I will downgrade to XP and have done with it. I have no need for an unusable laptop.

Boot into safe mode and roll back the driver through the device manager. Open the installed updates window through the Windows update manager and uninstall the bad guy. Then open the check for updates feature. When the bad guy shows up, right click it then click hide update. That prevents the bad guy from being included in future updates. A little knowledge of the system can save a lot of heartache. If you're fuzzy on the details, try the help menu. It will make you a lot happier than flaming Vista.

I have had the same experiences. With a new HP a6212n, with VISTA Home Premium pre-installed, Microsoft has - in effect - done the advertising for Apple. Not only have I had data disappear immediately after saving, but also have had the unnerving experience of finding MS Word CHANGING TYPEFACE of a paragraph above what I'm typing as I'm sailing through ad copy I'm preparing.
If you don't think that totally destroys the creative juice flow, you have never worked in the creative professions.
Billy Gates, you ought to be ashamed.
