    "Disaster for the Average User"

    by bls745 on May 9, 2005

    Pros: Better Security

    Cons: Compromised Many Programs

Summary: I finally agreed to update after endless nags from Microsoft for SP2. Immediately I had problems from e mail to Word and constant security clearance screens. So I removed SP2. Wrong thing to do. It rendered my whole system inoperable, I had to pay $200 to Advanced Software Support through Dell to reload Windows. I almost lost my data as well as even the safe boot system was inoperable for awhile. Admittedly, I'm not a tech expert but I'm not a novice either and all I can say is stay away from it.

Are the auto updates in fact not a vehicle to burden Windows XP SP2 in order to make Vista look fast and competent alternative in 2006? It amazes me how fast XP can be without all the patches etc, using third party protection apps. Is Microsoft feathering it?s own bed here?

Should MSN be able to offer SP2 sufficiently debugged to avoid conflicts with, say, Money? I think so, but it still caused the program to malfunction and also negatively impacted many other Windows and DOS programs on my Gateway computer running WIN-XP.

Fortunately, MSN techs assisted me to delete SP2 from every nook and cranny and restored my functionality. Any issue then? Of course: all this takes time and costs money (lost revenues, undone work) and prompts me to avoid MSN downloads which regularly have bugs in them.

Now, if only Google would develop a competing product....

Dell Dimension 8250, 1 GB RAM, 2.8 GHz, 533 FSB. Downloaded SP2, Ran Fine 4 A While ( Several Months ) Then, Machine Got Really Slow. It Eventually Killed Machine Necessitating A Fresh Rebuild. Reloaded SP2, Machine Died Right Away. Called Dell, They Said 4 My Machine SP2 Had 2 Many Bugs In It. Rebuilt Machine Without SP2, No Probs Since, Go Figure.
