All it does is work all the time.by gputz - March 2, 2010
Pros: It ALWAYS works
Cons: I dunno, it doesn't have all the newest security options.
Review: This is a product that has long since been discontinued, but I just had to have the last word... I've used this thing for over six years and it has done nothing but work without fail. I've tried newer units from Netgear and Belkin and both had regular drops. I just plugged in the MN-500 again and all was well - as before. This thing has been bulletproof over many years of constant use. Yep, it no longer matters to anyone else, but good job to Microsoft for marketing this little gem back in the day. I'll hate to see it go.

Better than many reviews suggestby swb_mct - April 29, 2009
Pros: Durable - Its the only router that I have used for 5 years.
Port Address Translation. (PAT, not just NAT) Its the only router that I have found that lets you translate an inbound port number from outside to inside.
Cons: The wireless range is not as good as some new routers.
Wireless security options limited.
Review: This router has a very unique feature of allowing Port Address Translation (PAT) on inbound traffic from a range of ports on the internet to a single port on an internal system. I have this unit on a security testing facility where 65000 ports show "open" from the internet, with all inbound requests PAT and NAT down to a single port on an internal system. This is only for a specific testing purpose, but this silly little router can do something that most commercial or consumer firewalls cannot do.

Not a bad wireless routerby anapro - April 2, 2005
Pros: Neat packaging
Cons: Some dropped signals
Review: When I first got this unit, I was a bit disappointed with the distance withing a house. However, I have since had experience with a NetGear 811g unit, and one supplied to my neighbor by SBC. The NetGear works only slightly better than the MN-500, and the SBC is horrible! Configuring the MN-500 is easy and straghtforward and is better than other units I have used.

EASIEST SET UP IN MY LIFE!!!by - June 18, 2003

Reason for this is that's what it took when I first bought the Linksys Wireless Broadband G. That didn't work so I ended taking it back. I was going to give up on wireless for awhile until I saw the package that was being sold at such a great price at Costco. Well when I got home, I plugged in all the cables, and powered on the computer. I was prepared to do some work as I was running Windows 2000. To my surprise, I launched IE and was connected to the web right away. I didn't even need to configure anything on my desktop. Actually...Pretty Decentby - May 8, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I saw lots of choices online and at my Local CompUSA that were the same price, $99.00. I was willing to spend that much on a wireless base station that could serve as a router for my internet connection. My network now is 75% wireless. Setup was pretty easy. And range for the inside of my house is pretty good. My only real problem is the lack of micromanagement control over the firewall, but there is alot of that with many other base stations (so I am not surprised). I would still recommend a software firewall to prevent access to the outside from unauthorized software on your system. Other than that, the Microsoft MN-500 is a very nice piece of equipment.

A real home run for Microsoft!by - May 3, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Bought the MN-500 base station and MN-520 laptop adapter last weekend to try and add wireless capability to my "hybrid" network. I have an ADSL modem routed through a 2Wire HomePortal router (with both Ethernet and phoneline connections active) and wanted to add wireless connection for my laptop. Microsoft's documentation tells you how to set up the MN-500 in bridging mode. Didn't think it was going to work at first, but it installed without a hitch. Only hassle was temporarily moving the modem connection from the HomePortal to the MN-500 and connecting the MN-500 to my PC's Ethernet port (then reconnecting the HomePortal to the MN-500 and the PC afterward). The connection has been active for seven days straight...absolutely no dropped connections. The MN-520 laptop adapter was truly plug and play too. All I had to do was load the software, insert the card, and punch in the (optional) wireless security code and my connection became truly mobile. My only problem has been lack of range when I take my laptop out onto the far reaches of my deck (one floor down and 60 feet away from the base station), but that may be attributable to the construction of my home. All and all I am quite pleased, however...and both pieces were a great value too. Found both brand new for less than $80 on eBay, but you can get them for around $100 if you shop around and take advantage of manufacturer's and store rebates. I know people like to bash Microsoft, but I've had no problems at all. The MN-500/MN-520 combo is a real home run for anyone who wants to either build a wireless network from scratch, or add wireless capability to an existing network.

Our use is in a suburban environment that doesn't have huge interference problems, so I don't know how well this product would perform in an urban environment, but it works fantastic for us! Few networking products work without some sort of installation glitch but I suspect this product comes as close as can be. Could only install easier, by installing CD itself!!by - April 17, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Got a great deal at Staples, Base Station, PCMCIA wireless, and Ethernet card for $90.00 with 5 mail-in rebates, 3 from Staples and 2 from Microsoft. Easy to install, but where I sit on the first floor, the PCMCIA card is on my left and the Base unit is behind me about 20 ft. to my right and 4 ft down in my basement with a cinderblock wall nearby and 2 walls plus a floor to go through. I get a very poor signal reading but at 11 Mbs. If I make a 180 I get a good signal. I can probably get longer cables and run the base from the first floor, where there's a will there's a way. People ask me "How can you be on the internet net with no physical hookup?" I just say I am a personal friend of David Copperfield, "It's MAGIC"..

Easiest Network Setupby - April 17, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Just replaced a 6 PC HomeRF network with the Microsoft network. Setup wizard did everything including configuring ethernet adapters and non-Microsoft adapters. Total time for 8 PCs (even networked a couple of old Pentium notebooks), 3 hours. Time to configure old Intel Home RF network, two weeks with numerous calls to tech service. Would recommend to anyone. BTW, wait until the unit automatically updates firmware before installing other adapters.

Great Product, Great Software, Great Support!by - April 15, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: This product integrates perfectly with windows xp. The setup could not be easier, and if you do come along with a problem, it has built in troubleshooting. And if that doesent work, you can call MS' 24/7 customer help line which is actually very helpful. The product is very sleek and cool looking and has great performance. Much better looking than any Linksys product which has 4 antenna's sticking out of it

Not 100% compatible with Win2000by - March 3, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: As soon as I inserted the setup CD it came up with the following message: "Setup has detected that Microsoft Windows 2000 is running on your computer. Although you can use Windows 2000 with Microsoft Broadband Networking, you cannot use it to configure the base station." Kind of speaks for itself if you're a Win2000 user like myself. I wish it had said something about this on the box. The product works well but I have no option other than return it and get something different. There is no way I'm changing operating system. Surprising to see something like this from Microsoft, makes a good party joke though

Running on 4 computers in 45 minutes, even mom and dad set one up for their houseby - March 1, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Just followed the directions and I was up and running in less than 45 minutes. Make sure you have the DSL up and running first, the correct user name and password for your DSL provider and the setup wizard and equipment does the rest. Run the firmware update before you hook up wireless components and you have no problems with the network.. The firmware update runs automatically when you set up the system, runs automatically from the broadband utility, or you can run it manually with the directions from the Microsoft webpage I have been running the network (I have wired desktop (XP Pro), two wireless laptops (XP Pro and Windows Me), and a wireless desktop (Windows 98) for a little over a month now and I haven't had any problems. The range has been good, with the base unit is in a front bedroom and I can sit on my back porch (200 feet away)and work on the laptop with a speed of 4-6 mbps. I was worried reading some of the negative comments but I followed the directions step by step and had no problems, the toughest part of the hookup was plugging in the cables. The built in firewall and 128 bit encryption are a great security feature. Bought one for my dad and mom and they set it up in their house with no problems.

Bad wireless performance in closed environmentby - February 24, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I have wireless network for 3 years now. I used Orinoco access point and on one of my computers Microsoft Wireless USB Adapter. I purchased MS Base Station to replace Orinoco access point. When I finally installed it, computer in my bedroom with MS USB adapter only got "Very Low" signal and 2 Mbps. with Orinoco plagged back in - "Very good " reception and 11 Mbps. I should say that I setup my network in apartment building, and there are 3 masonry walls between access point and computer. It was too big of a challenge for MS Base. Signal simply did not go throgh. Orinoco displayed much, much better result. So if you plan to use it in enviromnent with several physical barriers, do not buy it. I will return mine. Everything else - features, setup, design, manuals - superb.

Did Microsoft Really Make This? Sure did.by - February 21, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Having a 1GB Ethernet Cat5e and Cat 6 Netowrk just doesn't cut it when you really need to be able to have a wireless solution.! Dont be fooled as was I. Being Sceptical at first i decided to look into many other 802.11X [G, A, B, AB, GA] wireless bandwith products. All in all this product was a steal at the unbeleivable price of $90.00 USD. after instant $40.00 USD Rebate from Best Buy.! Many of the other options as far as bands go did not have near as many features that the MN-500 has.. All options are configureable and perform excellent, note the problem with NAT that microsoft has released a Firemware Upgrade which fixes it [avail @ www.microsoft.com/broadbandnetworking] Other than that you can do anything with this amazing peice of hardware. In contrast to what many people think it is possible to share a dial-up or isdn connection to the net with others useing the MN-500. More details @ www.erockinc.com/bbnetworking. thought it is possible to do so i would deffinatly reccomend jumping on the Broad Band bandwagon and getting incredible speeds from a cable provider in your area. The speeds for transfering on this do trail behind one of the HP products but not to a point where you notice a difference unless transfering a file over 100MB.. This product is deffinatly Microsoft's best yet.. Beautiful product .. excellent proformance.. Only thing i would change is the outside design.. simply because i would rather have a more standard sized component rather than one i must stack or stand seperate than the rest.. A must have product for the true tech.. Thought the support does lack a bit of thrust they do answere and try thier best.. if you have any questions or comments.. or just need help with this component please feel more than free to email me @ Robbenavides@hotmail.com and i will answere asap.. please make the subject "MN-500 Questions" so i may descifer this from other support questions. I would say microsoft has done it again but i think this may be the first time they really have "Done It" WWWAAAAHHOOOO

Straightforward, Excellent Performerby - January 27, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Got this for Christmas and am very pleased with it's performance. Using it for a wireless connection on a WinME laptop and a ethernet connection on a Win98SE desktop. Summary for those who don't want to read the details below: I've been nothing but pleased with the reliable performance, ease of use of the base station, security and firewall features, and tech support has been excellent. My only complaints are that it won't share a dial-up internet connection, in case I ever need to go back to it (hopefully not) and that I don't see a log for the Firewall to let you know what kind of access attempts have been blocked. I have not had to reset the the basestation or my cable modem once in the month we've had it. Wireless performance on the internet is as fast as the cable modem can deliver it. Setup was easy on the desktop, using Microsoft's utility to configure my ethernet card. I did have installation trouble on the laptop thanks to MacAfee's Firewall not uninstalling properly. (Hint I have MacAfee Professional 7.0, and the only way to uninstall properly is to uninstall everything including VirusScan - removing the Firewall only hosed Internet Explorer and the DNS Server settings). Microsoft's Tech support worked with me, thoroughly troubleshooting my computer and manually setting up the network without the wizard until we discovered reinstalling the Firewall and then uninstalling all MacAfee software was necessary to get my internet connection working. He even stayed on hold when I had to call Charter Pipeline's Tech Support. Overall, I have to say I'm pleased with my purchase especially since we got a particularly good deal at Staples.

Microsoft doesn't support on XP Pro Tablet editionby - January 25, 2003

If this is the configuration you're looking to setup, don't expect any help from Microsoft.

Good Product, Good Price, Good Purchaseby - January 18, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: When I began the venture of researching what wireless network products to buy I had no idea Microsoft had even released networking products. I was alittle leary when first seeing it, I remember thinking "great at software" but that is way different from hardware. Anyway, after reading many reviews on all different kinds of wireless products microsoft seemed like the best value and somewhat of a good product. I purchased the kit for around $150. After reading many reviews about setup, I was dreading it, Thinking this is going to take Hours on end to setup a wireless network. This is what was shocking for me is that it only took maybe 30 MINS if that to setup the microsoft kit. I couldn't believe it was so easy, I seriously asked myself that very question, Something has to be wrong. This is way to easy. But there wasn't, I installed the base station on my desktop and the card on my laptop. Everything worked great and FAST. Internet, File Sharing and Print Sharing all worked. Also Microsoft has a great website for support. If you have any questions or need immediate help they have a great newsgroup where people can post and get responses I would say within 2 hrs from posting. So I have been nothing but satisfied with this product. I would not change anything about it. The only thing I was suprized was how slow it is transfering files from 1 computer to another. That might not just be an issue with this product but all wireless networks. I just don't have anything to compare too. So after reading this I hope you decide to go buy. It is worth it and I know you will not regret.

Worked out of the box in 30 Minby - January 17, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: My concern was that this would be like modems used to be, but it is not that hard. We have a old Dell P2-233 and a new P4 Toshiba laptop now sharing a DSL connection. Installtion was simple and direct. The only problem was a recurring lockup of the Win 98 machine after booting up. A call to MSFT support resolved it in a few minutes as the outstanding support rep suspected that it was not related to the networking at all but something in the Win 98 setup. We simply disabled a bunch of apps that were included in the startup (most did not really belong) and its worked like acharm since. Still having some trouble with printer sharing.

Outstanding customer supportby - January 1, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I purchased the MN-500 on New Years Eve and installed it that evening. The installation process via the wizard did not work. I called Microsft support and the technical support person quickly found the problem to be the software firewall previsously installed for my cable modem. Even though I had uninstalled the software as recommended by the MN-500 user's manual, the uninstall process process for this particular software left behind a file that created problems. Once we took care of that, the installation worked smoothly. The customer support representative even sent a follow-up email with some additonal tips regarding issues I discussed with him. So far the MN-500 is working flawlessly.

Almost too simpleby - January 1, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: You have to wonder about Microsoft. Do I really want another MS product? But I had the Linksys ethernet router.. and I wanted something wireless. This was painless and simple. Lots of nice security features for locking down your wireless access. Very easy to install. Just as easy as Linksys was. Updates happened immediately after it was on the network. I like the fact that it checks for it's own updates to the software. Keeping up with fixes will be nicer now. I came from a Linksys router where everything just worked and it worked flawlessly and simply. This Microsoft product with it's base station and USB hub and PCcard holds true to those same principals. I'd highly recommend it to anybody who's going wireless and needs a no-brainer.

Wireless Connectivity at a Good Priceby - December 19, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I found a pretty good deal on the laptop network kit with the base and wireless notebook card at Target for $99 so I figured I would go wireless. When setting it up on my home network it really did not like my IP address setting for my router and switch. After tinkering with it for about 45 minutes I found a setting that allows the base to act as a wireless switch. Once I set it to that everything ran just fine. The software installation on my laptop (Windows 2000) was interesting, but nothing too bad. It found the base unit and finally configured itself. Transfer speeds are about what you would expect for wireless, but I mainly got it for my laptop and the rooms on the other side of the house I do not want to run cable to.

Works great after some installation glitchesby - December 17, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The base station installation wizzard had some hiccups trying to install the Microsoft Broadband Utility software on a desktop running the new XP Media Center Edition. Tech support was just fantastic eventhough it was their first encounter with Media Center. MAC cloning and disconnecting and powering down all the network devices for 5 minutes did the trick. Connecting a laptop running '98 via wireless adapter went quickly and well. Adding another desktop also running '98 via a wired USB adapter only worked halfway - got internet connection, but could not access the shared files and printer on the network. Another support technician, specializing in '98 support joined the support call and got the problem resolved after a fair number of tries. So far, performance is great via the wireless connection, with no dropped connections, eventhough the base station is on a different floor. I should also mention that we are using one of those 2.4 Ghz multi-handsets phone system, and contrary to my expectations, there was no interference problems. All in all, it is a great home networking system which makes fighting to get on the internet among the various family members a thing of the past...

I too noticed range and wireless connectivity issues but three days ago, an update issued automatically, installed it, and I have lost my wireless link once or twice in the last 3 days. (Good assuming I have microwave, 2.4Ghz phones, etc.) I'll have to wait a couple more weeks to see if it really is what it is cracked up to be.

Review: I'm not a techie so I can't comment on the technical aspects of this product but all I know is that I was at a friends house and used his Siemens/Speedstream router/notebook adapter and it was great! Worked like a charm thus I had to run out and get one for myself. Went to Best Buy and bought the Microsoft MN-500 Router and MN-520 Adapter. Couldn't load correctly thus had to call support. Finally got loaded and didn't work for more than 10 minutes before I got disconnected... from 10 feet away... Constantly reseting the router which seems the only way to get reconnected... Simple Setup and Ease of Operationby - December 5, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: My first attempt setting up a wireless network and it went off without a hitch. I hooked up a desktop and notebook, both running Windows ME, first time and have had no problems whatsoever. My broadband access is through Comcast and seems solid and reliable - no drops and good signal strength throughout my two-story home. Wish everything Microsoft sold was this easy!

No Complaints!by - December 2, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I purchased a D-Link 614+ first, but could never get a WAN set-up with my Adelphia Powerlink Service. Bought a MN500 and had it up and running in 10 minutes. No problems with my wireless connection (Microsoft Wireless Network Card) so far. I would recommend using the broadbanding networking newsgroup on the Microsoft site for anyone who has technical questions. I have very simple needs, and getting a reliable (so far!) router and wireless card for $140 (after $30 Microsoft rebate)is icing on the cake. (Router is $99 at CompUSA!)

Pros:

Review: This unit was not ready for primetime, i definetely recommend Linksys or Dlink over this unit. Microsoft released this unit with buggy firmware. Over time it connection and has to be power cycled. I have to power cycle this unit almost once a day. Thats ridiculous!!! Supposely Microsoft is in the works for a new firmware fix...but i expect to have more bugs in the future. I hate this product!!!

Feature rich diapointment!by - November 24, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Read the reviews here and wasn't surprised at the anti Microsoft banter... but tried the device out... MN500 Wireless Gateway and MN520 Wireless Notebook NIC. Hooked them up and it was great ....was networking and on the internet with a great signal in 5 min. That lasted about 1 day. Then everything went to hell.... IF my experience is the common one I have to say... I smell class action lawsuit. The hardware and software are great... they just aren't dependable and support is...well aware of the issues... and conveniently skirts them... I will be taking my product back and reinstalling my old intel rig... what a dissapointment. I think that Bill should stick to software and limit his hardware to mice. At least they work and have REAL support.

Pros:

Review: Intially I was walking out of the store with Linksys Wireless router and AP and I saw this product and absolutely loved the design and I had to buy this one. Had trouble setting up initially and thought I had defective product but I decided to call customer service 1:30am in the morning and "WOW" Awesome service they had. The support sounded as he was looking in my screen (Not remote assistance, were on the phone) and fixed the problem. Absoultely best service. 2. I have two computer at home, one desktop and one laptop. Desktop is only 20feet away from router sitting in the other room, but connection speed and signal strength is fine, but my laptop with Linksys PC card is having problem downstairs. I don't know if this is router signal that is weak or PC card that is no good. I am gonnal try out with other PC card soon.

Two big problemsby - November 17, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Installation is quite complicated if you have Windows 2000. Once I survived that, however, I was fairly pleased at first. Now I'm realizing that it crashes several times a day and it's not my fault since other users are experiencing this problem. I'm pretty tired of running around the apartment resetting this thing. Should have looked elsewhere first.

Finally, something that works as it should!by - November 15, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: After struggling with a Linksys BEFW11P1 for almost 8 months, with 2 returns, and still poor performance, (ie has to be reset every 10 mins, can only have one computer on the net at a time, unreliable file transfer, etc.) I gave up and bought the MN-500. It worked flawlessly from the moment I installed in (in about 30 mins total). I have an XPPro desktop and 2 XPHome laptops, and all now access the web simultaneously, I can see and access all shared folders, and the range is very acceptable. All have linksys wireless cards which (thankfully) all work well with the MN-500. The nightmare is over! Thank you Microsoft!

Almost wonderful.by - November 14, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly and easily I was able to share my DSL connection among my three home computers using the MN-500, a couple of MN-100 adapters, and a piece of twisted pair cable (for the machine sitting next to the MN-500.) Setup was a breeze, even for my Win2K machine, which did not have the benefit of MS's nifty little Wizard. On the other hand, I did have a bit of trouble getting file-sharing between the computers up and running. However, with help from the Microsoft tech support people, I was also able to resolve this. (Kudos to them - they answered my call promptly and were very knowledgeable, frankly surprising the hell out of me, given all the whining people do about Microsoft.) I have indeed noticed that my connection drops out from time to time, but - PAY ATTENTION HERE - you will read the same thing about each and every broadband router reviewed on this site. For my purposes, a reset now and then is no great inconvenience, a firmware upgrade to fix this problem is in the pipeline and will probably be available even as I'm writing this, and so my bottom line is a big thumbs up for this product (but beware if you are not computer knowledgeable AND you're running Windows 2000 on your computer(s) - the process of setting up is a cakewalk for XP and 98, but will challenge you if 2000 is your OS. MS has done an excellent job.

Review: I have just spent four days trying to iron this out. Finally, a Microsoft support rep sent me a firmware update. All is well. Support is fantastic, but couldn't find the update on MS support web, and nothing came over the automatic update. I don't know why this is so difficult when you are registered. Advice: if you have problems, check out your firmware updates.

Strong Signal and Reliableby - November 10, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The MN500 has a stronger signal than the Siemens 2623, 2624, and Linksys routers I've used. Setup was very easy. I set my WAN at home up with a satellite router (no computer connection) and it worked great. Four PCs are always connected. Great speed - getting top speed through walls, concrete, duct work. Even reaches out to an apartment 100 ft. away. Also have two Microsoft USB wireless adapters, and they are exquisite! Using Linksys Wireless PCMCIA cards on the other two computers. Wishing for remote access, and a wall mounting kit.

Contacted Customer Support for my problem but, it worked out fine!by - November 10, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Had a problem with the base station recognizing the web. After working with the start-up guide, found that I still needed MicroSoft Customer Support to lend a hand. Now, I'm cruising the net from my laptop from second floor bedroom with ease. Finally able to share files and share printer on 1st floor. It seems that I was trying to connect to the internet via dynamic (obtaining IP address dynamically). I should have set it up as PPOE which is the way SBC Ameritech here in Chicago does it. Also, you no longer use your usual software to connect to the net. It is all done with the Broadband Network Utility (See Tray at bottom of computer, if you have installed the software correctly and then connected the hardware). I was very impressed with the way the Tech person hung in there with me. Connection seems as fast as sitting infront of the Hardwired Desktop. Network seems pretty stable and I haven't lost more than two of the bars out five that show signal strength from the wireless connection.

Cons:
Review: I bought it at circuit city, price went down to 129.99. Easy to set up. There were no problems, and I didn't have to call Microsoft Tech Support. Reception is good, the USB receiver is in another room and I usually get 3/5 or 4/5 signal strengh. Speed seems to not be a problem. I played Galactic Battlegrounds and there was no lag. Game was smooth. I don't know how good the broadband function works since I can't get DSL. But as far as the networking goes, it's great. Kudos to Microsoft for this superb product!

Better than NetGear!!by - October 30, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: After two days trying to get NetGear stuff to run, and two hours on the phone talking to mediocre support staff in India, I took my NetGear stuff back to the store and bought this product. In 45 minutes I had three machines out on the internet - no problem. Great Wizard. Sharing files over a network was more difficult, but M/S Support were excellent, finally figuring out that even though I had my firewall software turned off, that I would have to deinstall it. Once I deinstalled I had no more problems. Range? Seems OK - my house is only 45 feet so is not much of a test. It does not like it when we turn on the kitchen microwave! I've also had a few unexplained drop-outs - so will look for firmware upgrades.

Wait for a firmware upgradeby - October 7, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I bought this base station as part of the Wireless Notebook kit and had nothing but problems from day 1. Specifically, the base station would fail to sync up to the wired connection every few days, and would disconnect the wireless connection every 30 minutes or so (even with authentication turned off). This is apparently a known issue (check Usenet for this model) and MS is working on a fix. Avoid this product until then. Even with the fix, however, there are other products at the same price point with better features - the D-Link DI-614+, for example, offers 256 bit security and 22mbit throughput. I returned my MN-500 for the DI-614+ and would not go back to Microsoft's product, fix or no fix.

They told me at first that since my computer is an HP that I would have to call HP tech support. I explained to the young man that the product I needed help with was from Microsoft and eventually he got fed up with me and sent me to another tech guy. The next guy told me that there is something about Comcast that makes the modem unable to release the ip address to the base station. Anyway, after I finally got it to work I found out that it only worked about 15 feet away from each other. I took it back and got a Netgear router.

Linksys is better optionby - September 26, 2002
Pros:

Review: the linksys wap11 4 port wiresless router/switcher is better in terms of speed, reliablility, it includes; a uplink port to expand to add up to 256 users per subnet, port forwarding and includes built in suport to work seemlessly with zone alarm to protect your network, combined with logging and the best support and ease of setup, i can't see how this could even come come close to match in anything exept for price. And maybe firware holes, wich linksys and d-link have allready sorted out in their several years in this market, for those of you wanting the best range look for something with the prism chipset, or find a acesspoint that is easy to find adaptors for antennas (linksys, ornico cards, apple airport ect.)

Good product online up in minutesby - September 25, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I recently bought this after my Linksys router went belly-up. 3 out of 4 Linksys routers I've owned or set up for friends have had the WAN port fail, which renders them glorified 4 port hubs. Mine failed yesterday. When I went to the store I saw the Microsoft products and was initially hesitant. I went ahead and got one because the store had a 30-day return policy. After reading the "install the software" first warning, I discarded the software and hooked the unit up in place of the old Linksys. I assumed the default IP address would be the same as the Linksys, but I didn't find anything at that address. So I installed the software on my computer and started the config wizard. The config software had me hook the router directly to my computer, found it and had me config some basic options, like the IP address. Turns out the default IP on mine was 192.168.2.1. After I configured the basic stuff, I put the router back in it's place and BAM! I was back on the internet. Once it was back on the LAN, I could access all of the configuration options through the browser, just like the Linksys. The builtin wireless is nice for my friends when they come over with their WIFI devices, but I will disable it while nobody is using it. Microsoft did a nice job with their web interface for configuring the more advanced options. They add a section in the forwarding option to let the unit open ports when specific applications are requresting those ports. If your application requires ports to be open for conferencing, the router will open those ports while you are communicating and then close them when you complete your conference. I've only had it for 24 hours but I like it better than the Linksys. If my WAN port blows anytime soon, I'll be back to vilify it. Hope this is helpful.

Good price, easy set-upby - September 23, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I recently purchased a PDA with built-in Wi-Fi (Toshiba e740) and it prompted me to go wireless in my house. I also have a desktop, laptop, and broadband connection as well. I looked over the reviews from a few different sites and they were all positive (of course, the MS bashers will say that it is a conspiracy though), so I went with the MN-620 setup (the MN-500 with a MN-520 wireless LAN card for the notebook) Out of the box, the set-up wizard took on a few minutes to get me up and running. There were no problems with the setup as it autodected the majority of my settings. I enjoyed the ease security set-up as I would have had to go out of my way to turn it off (I found out that many other products leave it off to avoid 'techincal conflicts'). I had a minor glitch or two getting my PDA to work with the network, but a quick call to Microsoft's toll-free support line and they had me up and running with no problem. I saw some setups that were about $10-$20 cheaper though D-Link and Linksys, so it's not at a rock bottom price (yet very reasonable). Very positive experience overall.

DON'T BUT THIS PRODUCT!by - September 23, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Microsoft has done this before, and will do it again. They rush into these sub-markets, and then drop them just as fast. Leaving those who bought the products, alone with NO SUPPORT! MS made a cordless phone in 98. It was an amazing device, priced at about $200. MS lost interest in it, stopped making & supporting it. They made a remote control, same story. Stay with the makers who support their products until they go out of buisness.

MS bashers get a life. Provide a real review..by - September 23, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I knew before I even clicked on the reviews link that half of the comments would be strictly Microsoft bashing and not even about the actual product. It would be nice if you just save your personal MS opinions to yourself unless you can truly provide a review about THIS PRODUCT. I just saw it at CompUSA today and was interested in seeing what other people thought about it WHO HAVE ALREADY HAD SOME EXPERIENCE WITH IT! I look forward to seeing some actual reviews over the next few weeks from actual users. If you are just making a post to RANT about MS please refrain...rather than dilute the benefit these "Review forums" provide to interested consumers. Thanks!

Others have done it beforeby - September 23, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Microsoft should not try to gain a stranglehold on this market -- it would be disastrous for the industry if they were able to pervert it with their own proprietary "standards." This particular application has been done already, and cheaper, by other companies. You'd be better to go with a company that lacks an agenda.

Butt Ugly!by - September 23, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: It's butt ugly. Worst thing is that it doesn't work well hidden from view either. What a pain.
