SMC firmware update 1.0: MacBook Pros running cooler after update; Intel firmware update 1.0.1 still required for Boot Camp

MacBook Pros running cooler after update Several users have reported -- and we have noted in-house -- that the MacBook Pros overall surface temperature seems lower after applying the SMC firmware update released earlier this week.

In addition to subjective notions of lower temperatures, the freeware application CoreDuo Temp -- which accesses one of the MacBook Pro temperature sensors and is based on SpeedIt -- shows significantly lower temperatures on our in-house 1.83 GHz model.

Under low-to-moderate processor loads, our MacBook Pro now registers at 47-51 degrees celsius after 30 minutes of operation. Prior to the update, temperatures in the 56-60 degree range were more common.

Intel firmware update 1.0.1 still required for Boot Camp Note that this firmware update does not replace the functionality of the Intel firmware 1.0.1 update released in April, and available via the following links:

• iMac (early 2006) Firmware 1.0.1
• MacBook Pro (early 2006) Firmware 1.0.1
• Mac mini (early 2006) Firmware 1.0.1

In order to run Boot Camp, you will still need to run the above firmware updates even if you have installed the SMC Firmware updater.
