Tech Check in the 2018 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport
[Music and driving sounds].
Today we are driving the 2018 Infinity Q 50S red sport, and when it comes to technology it is either really, really good or really, really bad.
[MUSIC]
Infinity is really at the top of the game when it comes to drivers aids and one thing that sets it apart is distance control assist and this is kind of like half of adaptive cruise control in that it only slows you down.
Down.
And it keeps a safe distance between you and the car in front of you.
Now, some people might take advantage of that space and cut you off.
But the Q 50 acts really quick and it's really smooth.
When it comes to lane keeping assist the technology keeps you centered right in the middle of the lane while you're on the highway.
Now it can't do any kind of sweeping curves, but when the highway pushes left or pushes right, it keeps you bang dead-on center, and I really like it.
But my favorite is adaptive cruise control.
I just set it with this button here on the steering wheel, decide how close or how far away I want to be from the car ahead of me, and it just does its own thing.
It works well in stop and go traffic.
And even brings me to a complete stop.
It'll pause there for about three seconds.
After that the system disengages.
And you just have to flick the resume button on the steering wheel.
To get it going again.
So these are all great, right?
A plus on the driver's aids.
But when it comes to the infotainment system?
Ooh.
That's another story.
So let's pull over and I'll show you.
So those drivers aids are pretty cool in a Q 50 but as we've pulled over and we're checking out the in-tough, ugh not so much.
The system's just really old.
The graphics are kind of dated.
I just want a whole new shebang.
The top screen can be controlled through the steering wheel button or through the little dial down here in between the seats.
Or heck it's a touch screen.
You can just touch it.
Be cool.
The bottom screen I can control by these three shortcut buttons here or it, as well, is a touch screen.
So I go to information, gotta cool little eco drive report.
Right now I'm getting 59 out of 100, sorry nature, that's my bad.
One of the things I do like about this in touch system is the driver assistance page.
I can customize all these driver's aids to be the level that I want them at.
Lane assist, I can decide to keep the warning on or off.
I can keep the active control on or off.
Blind spot assist, again I can customize it how I want it.
Then I can turn it all on or off at once from this button here on this steering wheel.
And there is another cool app on here, which is the driving performance app.
I mean, it's a sports Sudan.
You might want to know what your GME is, maybe your fuel flow, what your steering angle is.
So, on this kind of a car, I think it's pretty cool.
But on the whole, this whole system is just not good.
I mean, there's no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto so you really have to be content with the native system.
It's not very intuitive, there's a lot of menus and sub-menus and I just want something new, I just want a new updated in touch system.
So while those driver's aids are all really cool, once you get inside with this in touch system, you might be a little disappointed.
