>> Hi. I'm Josh Goldman, Senior Editor with CNET Reviews, and this is a look at the Nikon Coolpix s640. It's a midrange, ultra-compact featuring a wide-angle lens with a 5X zoom and optical image stabilization. On back is a 2.7-inch LCD and some well spaced controls that should be familiar to anyone that's picked up a digital camera. Press this camera button right here, and you bring up all the shooting modes, which in this case are all aimed point and shoot users. The most control you get is in the program mode called auto on this camera, and that gives you settings for white balance, light metering, ISO color options, and auto focus. You also get scene modes and auto scene recognition, smart portrait, subject tracking, and a basic movie mode, VGA only, and no use of the optical zoom. Photo quality is excellent up to ISO 200, but above that, things get a little dicey, especially over ISO 400 with visibly increased noise and loss of detail. The shooting performance is better than other recent Coolpix cameras have tested with a fast start-up time in auto focus and fairly low shutter lag, at least in bright conditions.
